A statue of Christopher Columbus was taken down in Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday morning amid renewed criticism over the legacy of the explorer.
[ ]
The statue, which will be placed for safekeeping in a city facility, had been a gift from the people of Genoa, Italy, in 1955.
[ ]
Mayor Andrew Ginther announced last month that the statue would be coming down, saying it doesnt represent the citys values, news station WSYX reported.
For many people in our community, the statue represents patriarchy, oppression and divisiveness, Ginther said. That does not represent our great city, and we will no longer live in the shadow of our ugly past.

Ohio ping
They are ignorant fools!
Even when the country sobers up, I think it will be awkward to bring these statues back.
What will we replace the statues with? I hope it’s not abstract modern art intended to look ugly and meaningless. And I hope it’s not statues of Great American Rap artists.
We live in the Idiocracy.
A pandemic of stupid.
A contagion of dumb.
This erasing of history has got to stop.
Wonder what Italy will think.
Yet one more foreign policy problem for President Trump.
ugly past?
Ohio will be like NY, CA, WA, Oregon.
Terrorists will rule BY THE CHOICE OF THE MAYOR.
Bye. Bye.
So, will they remain consistent and rename the city, with all of the onerous, expensive effort that will take?
And all of the maps and books. These people need to be exiled. At the very least.
Christopher Columbus will be remembered long after these fools are forgotten.
Statues of Floyd, Obama and others of color will soon pop up everywhere.
When are we going to take down MLK statues? After all he said “all lives matter” when he said character not color is what matters.
These statues are works of art.
Art is a mirror.
What we see in it is a reflection of ourselves (our beliefs, outlook, etc.)
As a child, I saw Columbus as a man who held his own beliefs and was willing to put his life and reputation on the line for them. (re: size & shape of the world).
As I grew older, I saw Columbus as a man who brought the message of Christ to the new world.
Others see him differently - dare I say evil minds think evil thoughts?
If it weren’t for Columbus, many of the ignorant masses demanding his statue removal would still believe the Earth is flat.
Right. If anything was causing division in Ohio, it was this idiot mayor tearing down the statue of Columbus. Get him out of office ASAP!
Andrew Gunther is a weenie. Patriarchy? Yes, Columbus was a man. Oppression? Of whom? Divisiveness? If so, that means there are millions of people who disagree with your action.
Goodbye Columbus!
