A statue of Christopher Columbus was taken down in Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday morning amid renewed criticism over the legacy of the explorer.
Crews arrived around 3 a.m. with a crane to remove the bronze statue from its perch outside Columbus City Hall, news station WBNS reported.
The statue, which will be placed for safekeeping in a city facility, had been a gift from the people of Genoa, Italy, in 1955.
But Columbus’ namesake city has experienced renewed calls to re-evaluate symbols associated with him — as critics characterize him as a symbol of white supremacy responsible for the destruction of indigenous cultures.
Mayor Andrew Ginther announced last month that the statue would be coming down, saying it doesn’t represent the city’s values, news station WSYX reported.
“For many people in our community, the statue represents patriarchy, oppression and divisiveness,” Ginther said. “That does not represent our great city, and we will no longer live in the shadow of our ugly past.”
He asked the Columbus Art Commission to evaluate the diversity and inclusiveness of all public art, including other monuments, statues and art installations.
Several statues of Columbus across the country have been vandalized or torn down in recent weeks — including one toppled by protesters in Richmond, Virginia, and another that was beheaded in Camden, New Jersey.

Are you racist or something? That should be Saint Floyd.
Damn them! Did they get input from the entire city? Or just a few rabble rousers.
For many people in our community, the statue represents patriarchy, oppression and divisiveness” — Mayor Andrew Ginther.
Yet, for MANY MORE people in the community, Columbus represents brave people setting out to explore the unknown and accomplish great things such as opening up new continents, people looking to escape the stifling religious culture of 15th century Europe, people willing to leave all behind to start new lives, the conquest of new lands, the subjugation of primitive stone-age aborigines, and the spoils that go with being the victor.

The removed the statue of Columbus because they thought it was offensive.....in Columbus.
With a crime rate of 41 per one thousand residents, Columbus has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 24.

You beat me to naming the top next question.
The positives of Columbus is much more than Columbus, it’s what Columbus represents.
Minus Columbus, the Spanish and Portuguese explorations of the 1400s and 1500s, and how they led to other European explorations to the Western Hemisphere, leading to eventual Spanish, French and British settlements in the 1600s, and later, then the timeline of the eventual founding of the U.S. is greatly altered or put in question.
Minus Columbus and the age of western exploration, western civilization’s establishment in the western hemisphere becomes a question mark, not a historical fact and accomplishment.
But my last statement is exactly why the statue topplers want Columbus taken down. They very essentially reject western civilization and what it stands for, particularly the freedoms it stands for.
And the District of Columbia needs a new name too.
Heck, Washington, DC, has got to go, in its entirety, because Washington owned slaves, and in today’s climate with liberals, he was a worthless human being. So the city of Washington needs a new name too.
They want to rename it Douglas, for Frederick Douglas............................
How much fun does Soros have reading the papers everyday?
I’m wondering if all of this anti-Columbus activity, virtually all of it coming from the left, will have an effect on the political opinions of Italian-Americans. There are over 17 million of them, and a lot of them vote.
Looks like they are sitting this out.
This action, like thousands of other similar actions, was taken out of irrational hysteria. Emotion, not reason.
House Democrats will vote to make Washington D.C. a state - and rename the District of Columbia the Douglass Commonwealth:
Like thieves in the night...... There is a reason these statues come down before daylight.
Another victory for lies over truth. The Khmer Rouge marches on. Can the red scarves be far behind?
