Soccer team ditches national anthem for this patriotic song (This Land is Your Land)

A semi-professional soccer team will no longer play the U.S. national anthem before matches and instead will be replacing it with Woody Guthrie's “This Land is Your Land.”

Tulsa Athletic, of the National Premier Soccer League, announced Wednesday that in order to create a more inclusive environment it will change the song. The team said it decided on making the change after reviewing the lyrics of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

“After carefully reviewing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner' lyrics and meaning, including the third verse which mentions ‘No refuge could save the hireling and slave / From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave…,’ Tulsa Athletic came to the decision that the song does not align with the club’s core values. While this verse is rarely sung, Tulsa Athletic does not believe ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ represents or unites their diverse players, fans and community,” the team said in a press release.

‘No refuge could save the hireling and slave / From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave…,’

I know this came up a few years ago but it's no surprise it has returned in the current climate.

In America today, the word 'slave' is a synonym for "African-American" and is the exclusive property of that demographic. Thank you public schools and the teachers unions.

An imadined dialogue:

Person One--Aesop of fable-fame was a slave.
Person Two--I didn't know Aesop was black. How cool."

Person One--Spartacus was a slave and led a slave revolt.
Person Two--"Spartacus was black? Why didnt they get a black actor for the movie?"

Person One--St. Patrick was a slave.
Person Two--"I didnt know St. Patrick was black. How cool."

Person One--The word 'slave' is derived from the word 'slav' as they were once the most common source of slaves in the Mediterranean world.
Person Two--"So the Slavs, you know, the Russians and all them, used to be black? What happened to all those original black Slavs, wiped out by racist whites?"

Helter Skelter may be their best candidate for a replacement.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave / From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave…

The SJW interpretation of this phrase has been debunked numerous times. According to historians, hirelings and slaves referred to the hired British Mercenaries (Hussars) and their minions.

It had nothing to do with the Africans working Democrat plantations.

I always found it humorous that Lincoln enjoyed the song “Dixie” and asked for it to be played by a band in a crowd on one of the last nights of his life as he stood on a balcony at the White House.

This Land Was Made for You and Me.

That’s not politically correct anymore. This land was not made for you and me, it was stolen by you and me — that’s the new orthodoxy.

So, I’d say this song is cancelled.

:..this land was made for you and me...”

I have always like the part but it just smacks of Manifest Destiny! See here:

“The history of the United States is a history of settler colonialism — the founding of a state based on the ideology of white supremacy, the widespread practice of African slavery, and a policy of genocide and land theft. Those who seek history with an upbeat ending, a history of redemption and reconciliation, may look around and observe that such a conclusion is not visible, not even in utopian dreams of a better society.
“That narrative is wrong or deficient, not in its facts, dates, or details but rather in its essence. Inherent in the myth we’ve been taught is an embrace of settler colonialism and genocide. The myth persists, not for a lack of free speech or poverty of information but rather for an absence of motivation to ask questions that challenge the core of the scripted narrative of the origin story.

“Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” celebrates that the land belongs to everyone, reflecting the unconscious manifest destiny we live with. But the extension of the United States from sea to shining sea was the intention and design of the country’s founders.”

(from: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2014/11/americas-founding-myths/)

There is a lot more on Woody being squarely in the Thomas Jefferson camp of western expansion.

Look like the Progs are going to need to burn some records!

Another slam on Woody.

“Woody Guthrie sang about Lewis and Clark country. Instead of his usual hobo’s plainsong, Guthrie broke into an anthem that might have been written by the National Association of Manufacturers: ‘Roll on, Columbia, roll on/Roll on, Columbia, roll on/Your power is turning our darkness to dawn/So roll on, Columbia, roll on.’

” Guthrie ardently wired up the dawn of Manifest Destiny to hydroelectric power: ‘Tom Jefferson’s vision would not let him rest/An empire he saw in the Pacific Northwest/Sent Lewis and Clark and they did the rest/So roll on, Columbia, roll on.’

“The beautiful, wild river made Guthrie see factories and dams...”

2nd amendment version:
This land is my land
This lands not your land
I’ve got a shotgun and you don’t have one
If you don’t get off
I’ll blow your head off
This land is private property!

Credit to some FR contributor who I don’t remember.

The only song that would have made me somewhat less despise them is if they had chosen ‘God Bless America’. F’km em!

And she's still dead to this day - however - it does not prevent us from singing it. :)

PS: I heard that Mozart is dead also.
