House to vote to make Washington D.C. the 51st state

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats controlling the House have slated a vote next week to make the District of Columbia the 51st state, an issue that they say has become far more important in the aftermath of protests for racial justice in both Washington and across the nation.

Next Friday’s vote, if successful, would pass a D.C. statehood bill for the first time in the House, but the legislation faces insurmountable opposition in the GOP-controlled Senate. It comes even as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced delays in the consideration of most other legislation. More than enough lawmakers are officially backing the bill for it to pass. In 1993, the Democratic-controlled Congress defeated a D.C. statehood bill by an almost 2-1 margin.

The process for statehood is not outlined in the Constitution.

Uh, no. Best option is to eliminate private residences and build 535 homes for the congresscritters, part of the permanent (and no grandfather clause) term limits (three in the House, one in the Senate), the rest of the city being Smithsonian, gubmint offices, embassies/consulates, and hotels.

The act of establishing DC as a State requires a Constitutional Amendment, not simply a law passed by Congress.

Just one of many articles stating that very thing...
The Constitution and the District of Columbia March 22, 2007

Statehood is now the clear preference of District of Columbia voting-rights advocates, but the proposal has never excited much support in Congress and would, in any case, also require a constitutional amendment since an independent territory, subject to the ultimate authority of Congress, was a critical part of the Framers' original design for an indestructible federal union of indestructible states.

Dead on arrival in the senate. We don’t need 2 more Dem senators or 4 if they toss in Puerto Rico.

You can’t make a state from one city!!!

And a small one at that. At least as far as population actually living within the district. And as the federal leviathan continuously grows, residential space is ever being gobbled up.

DC is only 68 square miles.

The smallest state, Rhode Island, is 1,212 square miles.

There is only one county is the U.S that is smaller than Washington DC! There are 3,141 counties on the U.S.

Only if they take NOVA and give them both the Maryland. Just let the good folks west of Germantown be part of WV.

Only one frickin’ voting Representative in the House. That’s IT! DC was never meant to be an actual state, nor should it be, since it is a sort of neutral ground for the seat of the US government, IMO.

Oh, and drop ‘em to one E.C. vote, too. That 3 vote amendment to the Constitution was Statehood sold by the drink.

It wouldn’t surprise me, at least with the House and the Senate.

They had a chance in the first two years of “Obama”, but wasted their political clout on Obamacare.

Give everything except for Lafayette Park, the White House, the National Mall and the adjacent federal buildings (such as the Eisenhower Executive Office Building located just outside of the Mall) back to Maryland and Virginia. Approximately 40 acres of D.C. was given back to Virginia in the late 1840s, so there is precedent for it. The only residence remaining will be the White House. Problem solved.
