The lone African American member of President Donald Trump's Cabinet said Monday he would “work” the president on the issue of athletes taking a knee during the national anthem, though Trump has shown no signs of softening, tweeting over the weekend that he would not watch soccer or football if players don't stand for the national anthem.
Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said he believes that players are kneeling to protest police brutality, not because they disrespect the flag. He added that players need to make that clear.

I like Ben Carson. He’s a smart, affable man. The last two times I’ve seen him mentioned in the news, he’s been suggesting that people need to calm down and back away from being so eager to give and take offense. That’s hard for me to argue with right now. While I think it’s foolish, this anthem crouch demonstration isn’t on my Top 100 list of things to worry about. The more I’d like it to go away, the more I think a couple of million people should just quietly ignore it and the people staging the gesture. Stop feeding your energy to it. I raised six kids. I’ve noticed that planting one seed of doubt and changing the subject deflates more immaturity than a hundred yells, threats, or swings of the belt.

Nobody “works on” the President of the United States. You either do what he says or you find other employment. If Carson doesn’t like how Trump feels about athletes taking a knee then he can always leave.
Well that's just stupid. Do they mean to say if some police stopped doing bad things they won't kneel anymore?
They think they can change human behavior and hearts by kneeling before they beat the crap out of each other?
If they have to kneel before a game either do it before or after the national anthem, not during. I doubt Carson can be persuasive enough to cause Trump to change his position.

With all due respect to Dr. Carson, the kneeling is NOT about ending police brutality.
That process is already underway. You will not find one person out there who isn’t shocked and horrified by what happened to George Floyd and determined that it should never happen again in our country. Not one.
And all the symbolism frankly won’t do a damned thing to help that come about.
Plus when you examine all of Colin Kaepernick’s statements over the past few years it’s clear that the kneeling is really about something more sinister than that.
Dr. Carson is bored. He should occupy his time creating a scheme to gentrify racial and religious no-go areas around the US. HUD easily has enough power to do so.
Taking a knee is just a stupid symbol.
