Many were sold to the settlers by black slave traders. Usually by those who defeated them in some tribal war. Those that weren't killed became slaves.

In another article & on Twitter, Obianuju Ekeocha tells the Dems these Kente cloths aren’t just “cute” & colorful, they actually mean something— specifically, the patterns determine particular tribes, not just Africans in general.
Ekeocha says she herself would never wear the kinte cloth the Dems are wearing.
So— along with the OP of this thread, we get the message Ekeocha was surreptitiously trying to send to American blacks—most of whom btw are sadly unaware of African history.
Almost all of them were. White people generally did not go to the interior of Africa. They died of disease, particularly malaria.
