Mayor Ted Wheeler on Monday offered all city of Portland employees 40 hours of uncontested bereavement leave to mourn 400 years of African-American oppression, including the police killings of African-Americans across the country.

As a nation and as a City we continue to grieve the recent loss of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, and others in the country and in our community. We acknowledge that Black employees are experiencing a collective grief and trauma coming from a culmination of oppression that is over 400 years old.
We hear and understand that many of our employees, especially our BiPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) employees, are deeply impacted by these recent events and are hurting.
I want to give our employees space to grieve and reflect: 40 hours of bereavement leave as allowed under HRAR (Human Resources Administrative Rules) 6.03.
One paid week off. Where do I sign up for a City of Portland job. Oh wait I have self respect. It wouldn't work out. Never mind.
What about the last 400 years of taxpayers being oppressed?
I wish my employer would do this. I can go fishing all day while I “bereave”.
Oppression by association is real time, among those not even personally affected.
Pure #ComDem_Insanity !
What? Oh, portlandia. So the popo is off for a week? Like a trial run once they’re defunded? What about the glbtqprxyzu folks? After all it is pride MONTH. Anyone seen the USA?
Are employees really going to spend all of that time off in bereavement related activities?
40 hours and a mule?
A new acronym to learn? Will this also neen to be added to the evergrowing LGBTQEIEIOBIPOC?
And who's disrespection our native friends by giving them a lower case letter i?
Wow. He jumped right on Ozzy’s train.
Stunningly crazy, stupid and wasteful.
Giving private sector workers 40 hours of bereavement leave, results in losing 40 hours of productivity.Giving non uniformed municipal workers 40 hours of bereavement leave results in losing 1 hour of productivity.
I wish they would give up that 400 years BS. Those were British colonies, not United States. White American men put an end to slavery. I guess that doesnt really move their agenda along though.
Is any prominent public official going to challenge this 400 years of Oppression nonsense?
Things are said which go unchallenged and then become accepted.
It just seems to go unchallenged that black people have been oppressed for 400 years in America.
Will anyone have the courage to say that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed almost 60 years ago? Will anyone have the courage to say that there are various laws and policies in place on affirmative action which have been in place since the 1960s?
Will anyone have the courage to say that major Court decision such as the Brown versus Board of Education decision were decided decades ago? And that while it took a period of years to fully integrate public schools that public schools were fully integrated, that we did away with the “de jure” segregation?
Do we get any credit for significant social and political changes which have happened since the Civil Rights Movement of the 50s and 60s? Anything at all? Or does none of that matter because the left has decided on this 400 years of Oppression mantra, and no one is allowed to say anything which would challenge that narrative?
My hope is that we win in a landslide in November.
My other hope is that every Democrat who complains about the election result gets punched in the face immediately.
+1.

I’m 81, and retired.
I just told my wife that I needed the rest of this week off from house hold chores, so I can deal with my deep bereavement as a true BIPOP!
I will not repeat what she said to me. She is your typical evil Brit, German and Swiss, all white woman.
They don’t get 40 hours to “bereave” a husband/wife/child/parent/sibling! Wanna bet that any White who takes this time off is fired? (Whites are never “oppressed.”)
I completely agree with post #2. I, too, suffer from tax payer oppression!!! I have to pay for other people’s kids, rent, schools, etc. and I mean there are a whole lot of etceteras!!!
