Bubba Wallace wore a shirt that read "I Can't Breathe Black Lives Matter" before Sunday's NASCAR race in Atlanta, and now the circuit's only full-time black driver is pushing for change at the track.
"My next step would be to get rid of all Confederate flags," Wallace told CNN on Monday. "No one should feel uncomfortable when they come to a NASCAR race. So it starts with Confederate flags. Get them out of here. They have no place for them."
Wallace, who drives the No. 43 car for Richard Petty Motorsports, recognizes his position will not sit well with some people.
"There's going to be a lot of angry people that carry those flags proudly, but it's time for change," he said. "We have to change that, and I encourage NASCAR -- we will have those conversations to remove those flags."
Wallace, a 26-year-old native of Alabama, said he wasn't always bothered by seeing Confederate flags.
"What I'm chasing is checkered flags, and that was kind of my narrative," Wallace said, "but diving more into it and educating myself, people feel uncomfortable with that, people talk about that -- that's the first thing they bring up."
When asked whether he thought his opinion on the Confederate flag was unpopular, Wallace said he sees it as something the sport must take a strong stance on.
"We should not be able to have an argument over that," he said. "It is a thick line we cannot cross anymore."

It’s a sickness
NASCAR already knelt the other day.
With their disgusting self-flagellating white shaming being broadcast all over the track area, and some of these drivers and crew kneeling, forget them.
All MLK streets and dunbar Drives must be renamed. Such nomenclature is the ultimate racism
Synthia Mckinney Boulavard should be abandoned and dug up.
Smart marketing on his part. Lots of cucks will flock to him.
NASCAR cant breathe. The leftists inside the organozation are on their neck.
Ratings and attendance have plummeted since they abandoned their fanbase over the last 20 years. As a very casual fan, it was gotten extremely boring and I barely pay attention.
The Left doesn't like the First Amendment very much.
NASCAR is already on life support, the kneeling and political correctness might just kill it off for good...
A once great sport, taken over by idiots who are on the verge of killing it....it would be a tragedy but I can see it happening...
I was done with NASCAR 5-6yrs ago. Nothing there worth watching, and they cave to every idiotic demand. Watch the stadiums stay mostly empty when the ban is lifted.
Bubba, let me just say:
FU*K YOU!
How about NO.
If someone goes to a race, pays WAY too much money for tickets, and he decides to fly a confederate flag at his tailgating set up, or wear it as a hat or a shirt, you have NO right to tell him he cannot.
Because that is where the confederate flag is shown, in the spectators area, the tracks have removed them already.
So focus on your driving, as mediocre as it is, and leave the few people that even bother to watch your sport anymore alone.
Bubba Wallace must be banned from NASCAR. His antiAmerican values do not belong on the race track
The Confederate flag should have been retired to museums long ago. Rightly or wrongly, it has the same odor as the Nazi flag and no one has any business flying it. Put it away. [Don’t bother flaming me if I run afoul of your racist bigotry, hate, and so-called Southern Pride. The flag was flown to kill Americans, was flown against the USA, was flown to promote and defend racism. Be proud of America, fly the American flag.]
Yes. When they demand the name of something be changed, take back the name of something already changed.
NASCAR is on the down slide anyway. Haven’t watched a race in years. Extremely boring. The younger generations are not that interested in mechanics and cars anymore.
They hate the American flag too. That’s next.
Never liked NASCAR, I prefer F1, GT, and Indy.
Who the hell is Bubba Wallace ?
Thank you for using your right to free speech, Mr. Wallace.
When, pray tell, were you vested with the authority to veto others’ right to free speech? I don’t suppose you have thought about the fact that you derive a great deal of wealth from the discretionary spending from those others you would deny the right to speak?
I also suppose you haven’t realized that many of those others see this as a hill on which to make a decisive stand. There may be few loud voices yet decrying this travesty, but the choice not to speak is itself a part of free speech.
You are a racist, Mr. Wallace. You are a bigot, Mr. Wallace.
You are a disgrace, Mr. Wallace.
Everything they touch like a festering cancer. NASCAR was ours so that made it a target and now theyre gone too.
