There are over 30,000 NYC police. What I fear is that these officers are some of the best (conservative) to leave, IF this story is true.

Given that there are ~36,000 police officers in NYC, I’m not sure 800 quitting is going to have that much of an impact...

There are some county sheriffs that are changing party affiliation.
Cops can be real jerks..especially NYPD. Part of it might be to exert authority to help stay alive.
But I understand and would never want to do away with them
I had an incident of crazy banging on my door and was in fear for my life. It was a cops circling my house because they thought I was housing a fleeing burglar from another neighborhood who was staying in my subdivision (from license plate)...who had fled when they showed up.
I will never forget it.
I peaked through the window and saw no cops cars and yelled I am not opening the door.
Finally I was convinced they were real cops and stepped outside. But I could have been part of the burglars and had a gun. They would have no way to know.
I told them that I didnt know who they were talking about and they couldn’t come in unless they had a warrant.
They kept saying YOU KNOW XYZ and WE KNOW HE IS IN THERE.
I was dumbfounded and freaked out.
They could have pushed in if they wanted.
It was surreal. I was hacked off
But I understood.
The one problem with pulling police out of a city is trying to force sane people to keep living in that city.

It’s not just the monthly pension cost. IIRC, unused vacation and sick leave payouts are lump sum at time of departure. What I can’t recall is if unused S&V were allowed to accumulate over years. Executive officers usually have many years of unused sick leave accumulated. Since I learned of this a limit may have been placed on amount of earned time....we shall see.

Hopefully, whoever she is, she earned those awards and didn’t get them as part of an Affirmative Action raffle.
I’ve known and even worked with several good women cops. We need more of them.
