“ Can they ARREST people?”

Under martial law I believe they can. At the very least they can shoot rioters and looters to death.

was it as bad as it is now with all this crazy looting etc

No, that's what happened in Detroit, DC, and elsewhere in 67 and in 68 when MLK was killed. But the 82d had actually engaged in combat against the Detroit thugs and the 82d got a reputation that you didn't want to mess with them. Word got out that we had arrived. It ended quickly and quietly, and I got flown back to Bragg so that I could throw my stuff in my car and drive to Shreveport, LA to get married.

The regular Army was used in Detroit in 1967 and LA in 1992. No new precedent is being set here.

They are giving the thugs every opportunity to back down.

US Troops moving on domestic issues? Or does this become legal if inssurection is declared?

Interesting question.
I thought that the "National Guard" did this.

I think that WE are the ONLY country on the planet without a national police force.

These units now have had years of urban warfare and containing and capturing insurgents mixed with civilians. The key to minimizing force will be to ID the organizers and remove them, physically, also jamming their comms

These antifa university professors and 30 year old “students” and trust fund millenials running around in black bandannas telling black people where to burn and loot think they are ninjas. They have not met battle experienced troops.

More than likely an MP unit will be deployed who has experience in dealing with drunken unruly troopers. As I stated a post back, deploying the 82nd without their hardware is unwise, giving them clubs, rubber bullets and tear gas makes it just a game.

I hope Trump does not give them ROE that puts our soldiers lives in jeopardy.

I think that the runway and all the hangers are now gone, replaced by housing. It was a good place to park the troops, the 3d Bde, 82d Abn Div and the 10th Marine Regiment. Fights broke out between the paratroopers and the Marines, so we were moved to the Pentagon where we bedded down in the hallways.

“US Troops moving on domestic issues?”

It has been the law for over two hundred years.

The updates were immediately repealed in 07 upon the Dems getting the House.

“Posse commiatus was re-written in the 2006 re-writing of the Insurrection act.

“In this case, the President can send them in until the states can restore order.”

Ask Lincoln if a President can send troops into a state against the will of that state, to put down insurrection.

The Constitution is not a suicide pact, as he said.

“...but they used to have Military Police units.”

I served 1969-1971 in 519th MP Battalion at Ft. Meade. Our primary mission was riot control, specifically physical security for the White House. Twice a year we did training for the FBI Academy at Ft Belvoir.

I expect they will go into DC as they did in 1968, by truck from Ft. Bragg. Although their lead battalion will probably be flown into Andrews AFB from Ft. Bragg. Having been on the mall many times, I wouldn’t want to do a combat drop there unless it was absolutely necessary. The grass area of the mall is only about 200 yards wide and a half mile long. Jumping could end up with some hapless paratrooper hanging from the top of the Washington Monument.
