The director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Friday that William Bryan, the neighbor who filmed Ahmaud Arbery's death, was not a good Samaritan or simply a witness as Bryan has claimed, but a significant player in the February killing of the unarmed black man.
"If we believed he was a witness, we wouldn't have arrested him," GBI Director Vic Reynolds said Friday. "There's probable cause and we're comfortable with that."
Bryan, who filmed the four-minute chase and shooting death of Arbery, was arrested Thursday evening.
The 50-year-old was taken into custody and charged with felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment. Two other men, Gregory McMichael, 64, and Travis McMichael, 34, allegedly went after Arbery, trapped and shot him four times. They were arrested on charges of felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment earlier this month.
Bryan, who is white, recorded the Feb. 23 confrontation as the McMichaels who are also white pursued Arbery while he was running through the Satilla Shores neighborhood, about 25 minutes away from downtown Brunswick.
"We don't go into a situation of this nature investigating a person or persons, we go in and investigate a set of facts and once we start turning stones over sometimes there's one or two stones underneath that need to be turned over," Reynolds said.
In Georgia, a person can be charged with felony murder if he or she is alleged to have contributed to another person's death, even unintentionally, while committing another felony.
Reynolds also said that state investigators had found "a number of pieces of video" that linked Bryan to the case.

Where can I contribute to his defense fund
Fry them all, three thugs.
Oh please.
After watching the videos of Arberys Walmart arrest and park confrontation its clear he was a low IQ thug with aggressive tendencies. Bad combination that led to his death.
Too little info at this point. My guess is they use the charge to get him to take the stand for the prosecution and say whatever they tell him to say. Then he walks.
Then there will be 4 thugs dead in the incident, right?
Whatever his low IQ was, etc. that does not excuse the thuggish behavior of the neighbors, chasing him down and murdering him. Why dont you focus on the killers for a little while, instead of the victim?
It just may be that his filming the event, his turning the video over to the police and media were not prudent decisions.
just as guilty as what? The men who were Defending themselves against a man that was attacking them? As guilty as the man who’s gun was being yanked away from him and accidental went off in all likelihood?
You can charge anyone with anything- but a man videotaping something is not guilty of murder anymore than a man who is being attacked and who’s gun goes off is automatically guilty of murder- The facts will come out in trial- It is very irresponsible for the GBI to be claiming the video person IS as ‘responsible’ as anyone at this point- this tells me the GBI has already predetermined how the trial is goi9gn to come out=- He’s trying to bias a future jury-
Same tactic used to get Flynn to plead guilty. Typical prosecutorial overreach
Or maybe, you are the type of person that will excuse a rape because of what a woman was wearing or her personal history?
He’s already determined two white men hunted down a black male with intent to murder-
In the future, citizens will just give eye witness testimony and that will be that.
Who runs the GBI? What’s the organization’s history? What’s the head’s history?
Why lynch Bryan?
No. But character is relevant. Courts allow character witnesses to testify.

Good post.
Has there been a good analysis of what the video shows? What does the video show happened, as opposed to what the two sides are telling us?
Not necessarily.
The GBI is also telling us that the McMichaels are no more responsible than Bryan.
