GBI says neighbor who videotaped Ahmaud Arbery's killing just as responsible as shooters
Fox News ^ | 5/22/20 | Barnini Chakraborty

The director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Friday that William Bryan, the neighbor who filmed Ahmaud Arbery's death, was not a good Samaritan or simply a witness as Bryan has claimed, but a significant player in the February killing of the unarmed black man.

"If we believed he was a witness, we wouldn't have arrested him," GBI Director Vic Reynolds said Friday. "There's probable cause and we're comfortable with that."

Bryan, who filmed the four-minute chase and shooting death of Arbery, was arrested Thursday evening.

The 50-year-old was taken into custody and charged with felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment. Two other men, Gregory McMichael, 64, and Travis McMichael, 34, allegedly went after Arbery, trapped and shot him four times. They were arrested on charges of felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment earlier this month.

Bryan, who is white, recorded the Feb. 23 confrontation as the McMichaels – who are also white – pursued Arbery while he was running through the Satilla Shores neighborhood, about 25 minutes away from downtown Brunswick.

"We don't go into a situation of this nature investigating a person or persons, we go in and investigate a set of facts and once we start turning stones over — sometimes there's one or two stones underneath that need to be turned over," Reynolds said.

In Georgia, a person can be charged with felony murder if he or she is alleged to have contributed to another person's death, even unintentionally, while committing another felony.

Reynolds also said that state investigators had found "a number of pieces of video" that linked Bryan to the case.

That was White Settlement Texas. Perp killed two before he was taken out by a single 15 yard head shot at a moving target.

We spent a lot of time studying that one and changed up a lot of our training as a result. Also changed my carry weapon for the church setting (to a G19) from what I normally carry around town (Sig 365). Just cant expect to make shots like that with a compact.

Regarding court and 'truth', I'm jaded. Truth and law are not the same, and half the judges are writing their own law. Like the good book says, its best to settle differences outside of court.

The GBI is normally a very reliable, very clean law enforcement agency. Here however, it seems they are either being pushed or pushing for convictions. With this Governor giving all his job appointments to women and minorities, it may not be hard to follow the trail of where their emphasis is coming from.

Same tactic used to get Flynn to plead guilty. Typical prosecutorial overreach.

That. And also to appease Crump and the BLM activists who called for Bryan’s arrest from the get go.

If he were to get caught by the defense attorneys saying “whatever they tell him to say” while on the stand as a prosecution witness, it might raise more reasonable doubt in the minds of jurors.

Provided they get a "reasonable" jury. I'm not so confident of that these days.

[[and half the judges are writing their own law.]]

God will hold them accountable for that one day- God is very serious about judges and how they should be completely 100% objective- and not write their own laws based on biases- Beign a judge is a very serious business- and God does not overlook callous bias in judges- He epcts judges to be completely objective and fair to everyone regardless of social status-

Here's a thought. What if the GBI finds that Mrs. Claradean Whitcomb, age 79, saw the pursuit while on her way to to the Piggly Wiggly. And she stopped to let the chase go through the intersection. In other words - MRS. WHITCOMB IS JUST AS GUILTY OF MURDER AS THE THREE BUBBAS.

Fry her.

“If he were to get caught by the defense attorneys saying “whatever they tell him to say””

He would instantly void the deal he made with the DA and would very likely walk himself into a perjury charge.

My original comment in post #6 was speculation that he'd say whatever PROSECUTORS want him to say.

He probably did not know then. But he does now. by the time the killing occurred, he was committed. The only way he might mitigated his situation was to have contacted the GBI this he did not do. Early in their investigation The head of the GBI said they were investigating him and he was cooperating. Evidently, something came up during the investigation because the head of the GBI said,"We no longer consider him a witness" and by his arrest implied that they considered him a defendant.

I don't think that the filming was the issue. I think that what got him in trouble, among other things, was the statement attributed to the senior Mc Michaels on a police report. To wit} [his name] was in hot pursuit of [victim's name] He tried to block him off but to no avail. or words to that effect. Once the GBI investigators read that, Mr. Film maker went from witness to defendant.

Very true. That is why a defendant has these pesky Constitutional Rights every one complains about.

“My original comment in post #6 was speculation that he’d say whatever PROSECUTORS want him to say.”

Perhaps, but with three Defendants, and only one Deal available, the pressure is on William to get chatty with the DA. Of course, Greg or/and Travis can talk as well, and make life much more complex for Mr. Bryan.

That’s what prosecutors do, and if you want to void every conviction based on the DA making a deal, you had better be ready to empty the prisons.

Travis, Greg and William are stepping over each other to make the best deal with the DA.

That is the best course to take.Very few Police Officers advise Citizens to take an active role in the apprehension and arrest of criminals. Observe and report. If these had heeded that advice, they would not be in the predicament that they are currently in.

I don’t know enough about this case to honestly say what is going on here... I hope the GBI is not caving to political pressures... though I am sure in GA the pressure to arrest every white person within spitting distance of this incident is probably huge.

I honestly don’t trust jack about anything I have read or seen thus far about this entire incident.

No, you don’t drive around your neighborhood with rifles trying to arrest or stop folks on a whim.... and no, you don’t charge at people with weapons and attack them even if what they are doing is wrong... No that you don’t have the right to, but if you do, there is a pretty good chance you will wind up shot.

To the freepers who are siding with the shooters, I really don’t give a damn if the person killed had run ins with the law before... so character assassination attempts are simply PR and Propaganda as far as I’m concerned.

I am not suggesting the person shot was a great guy, and I sure am not suggesting the guys driving around in their trucks confronting folks with firearms are great guys either.

This whole situation on its face, sounds like a whole lot of stupidity by everyone involved, that has now been wrapped up in racial politics and even more stupidity.

That’s just my take on this so far... maybe I’ll see something that changes my mind, but at this point, I’m hard pressed to see how the folks (sans this video driver) are just innocent victims in all this... Have no opinion one way or the other on the video driver at this point.

Anyway, as I said, seems like a whole lot of stupidity by a whole lot of people all around for this one.

In Criminal Courts, they go by the law. Not logic.

As Justice Brennan was said to admonish a young defendant: This is a Court of Law, young man, not a Court of Justice.

The only answer is to let all the FR lawyers pontificate absent the facts, and when the two (or three) defendants in this case are convicted come back and explain why their takes were so awful. Until then, there’s no point.
