STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden, which has opted for a more open strategy in combating the virus than other European countries, has the highest number of deaths in Europe per capita from the COVID-19 disease over the last seven days, data showed.
Sweden has kept most schools, restaurant and businesses open during the pandemic. While deaths are on the decline Sweden had 6.25 deaths per million inhabitants per day in a rolling seven day average between May 12 and May 19, according to Ourworldinsata.org. That was the highest in Europe and just above the United Kingdom, which had 5.75 deaths per million.
Over the course of the pandemic Sweden still has fewer deaths per capita than the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Belgium and France, which have all opted for lockdowns, but much higher than Nordic neighbours Denmark, Norway and Finland.
Sweden’s strategy, mostly based on voluntary measures regarding social distancing and basic hygiene, has been criticised by some as a dangerous experiment with peoples lives but also been put forward as a future model by the WHO.

I would bet when all is said and one, there will basically the same number of deaths over a similar time span before covid...covid is hastening the deaths of people, many already on their way out anyway.

And, of course the enemedia narrative can be counted on to be fake and almost always wrong.
The numbers are going to be high right now, but if they can keep COVID-19 out of the retirement/nursing homes and keep their hospitals from being overwhelmed, there’s no reason to think their final death toll will be any higher than anyone else’s. Ultimately, nobody really knows whether their approach is better or worse right now because we’re still in the middle of this thing. Countries forcing everyone to stay at home are certainly showing lower numbers of deaths in the short term, but I suspect they’re merely prolonging the inevitable.
It’s a nasty bug. It’s going to kill a lot of people. That’s really sad, but poverty also kills a lot of people and shoving the world into a depression is going to cost lives too.
Sweden’s open strategy seems to have softened the blow on the economy, with growth shrinking much less than in Denmark and Norway in the first quarter.

Sweden is #6 in deaths per capita in the world.
Denmark is #15, with its similar demographic characteristics.
All we know is that the two countries have shown much the same trajectory. Time may tell whether one nation’s policies were better. Or it may not.

Deaths per capita is cumulative, not “over last 7 days”
The important number is percent infected per capita, if that is high you are closer to being done.
The Dems and media are celebrating.

As to the headline, it is undercut by the text. Even before I read the text, I realized that a one week snapshot could be misleading.
My understanding is that Sweden has a Muslim problem. So I would look below the surface. Statistics could differ markedly between native Swedes and Muslim immigrants. As everywhere else, the city and rural divide should be considered.
The need to look below the surface was highlighted in the following story (as I remember it). Swedish economist: Our Swedes have a very low homicide rate. Milton Friedman: Our Swedes also.
It turns out that our Coronavirus problems are a big city problem. So state-wide lockdowns were unnecessary. Turns out, our problems were largely NY city problems vectored to Miami and other big cities. Sending infected people to nursing homes led to more deaths.
It’s not a world thing, American thing, or Swedish thing. Sweden is not one entity with one experience.
I do commend the Swedish politicians for thinking for themselves and bucking the trend. They should not be bullied into conformity by the press. That said, only time will tell if their strategy was good, bad or indifferent.
