The Secret Service has detected a large-scale foreign attack on the U.S. unemployment system that is processing record numbers of jobless claims amid the pandemic, according to the New York Times.
In a Secret Service memo obtained by the Times, the agency described the attack as a well-organized Nigerian fraud ring that could lead to potential losses in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
We are actively running down every lead we are getting, Roy Dotson, a special agent who specializes in financial fraud at the Secret Service, said in an interview with investigators obtained by the Times.
The attackers are reportedly using previously obtained social security numbers and other personal information to claim unemployment benefits.
Since March, more than 36 million people have filed for unemployment amid shutdowns triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. The sudden volume in jobless claims has overwhelmed state unemployment systems.
The attack was first reported in Washington State, where people who did not file for unemployment reported receiving benefits they didnt ask for.

This hole called Nigeria has one of the highest birthrates in sub-Saharan Africa.
because calling you on the phone explaining that the caller is the son of the prince in Africa and that you need to send him $5000 to receive $25,000 in checks is so 90’s.
Let me guess, they are shocked, shocked!
Print trillions and they will come. Trillions more on the way. It’s almost like waving a red flag in front of a bull.
Nigerian?
Overwhelmed state agency or not, if the unemployment check is going to a Nigerian bank, it should raise red flags.
I am appalled at the utter lack of security in our country. How about a bank account, tax returns, linked to an actual verifiable address with telephone and other untilities. And an affidavit from the bank stating that you have physically identified yourself to the bank in person and the address is correct.
And if you can produce that, then you have to appear in person with documents and witnesses.
But if you did something like that it could lead to voter ID, and we know where that is going.
Btt
I thought the Unemployment “System” notifies the Employer when an Employee files for unemployment benefits. The State government must get the Employer’s verification and approval first before granting benefits to the Employee. They give the Employer the option to file an Appeal.
This process is still in place during this virus situation, so it’s not clear how these stolen social security fake claims could get through the system and bypass the Employer.
.....”its not clear how these stolen social security fake claims could get through the system and bypass the Employer”......
Well everythings flooded that’s how.....businesses are scrambling just to stay in business let alone file appeals.
But you can betonce things level off there will be a piper to pay.
The U.S. needs wet teams clean up this mess.
Our company is shut down and our POBox is 1 1/2 hrs away. I aand my daughter (co owners) filed for UI. She has already received hers. When I checked the PO Box yesterday there was a letter from EDD to the company asking about her. Theyre so screwed up I dont think theyre checking anything. Shes not an employee shes a co owner and filed as one.
#5. You can contact Mr. Deep Shitt at Schitt’s Creek, Canada. You can also send him the unemployment checks he’s asking for. You know he’s an honest man and would never lie to you.
By the way, his summer address is GPO 666, c/o Mr. Good Fraud, Kano, Nigeria.
Guess things really are more chaotic with this than I thought!
Many people filing now are also self employed, freelancers ect. no employer to go through!!
