Two new studies are the latest in a series to show that a drug touted by U.S. President Donald Trump as a potential game changer against COVID-19 doesn't work.
Hydroxychloroquine reduces inflammation, pain and swelling, and is widely used to treat rheumatic diseases and malaria.
Laboratory tests of the drug against COVID-19 yielded promising results, but mounting evidence from clinical and observational studies suggest that it doesn't provide any meaningful benefits for COVID-19 patients.
In the first of the two new studies published May 14 in the BMJ, researchers in France assessed the effectiveness and safety of hydroxychloroquine compared with standard care in 181 adults hospitalized with pneumonia due to COVID-19 who needed oxygen.
Of those patients, 84 received hydroxychloroquine within 48 hours of admission and 97 did not. Treatment with the drug did not significantly reduce admission to intensive care or death within seven days, or the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome within 10 days.
The findings do not support the use of hydroxychloroquine in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia, said the team led by Matthieu Mahevas, from the department of internal medicine at Henri-Mondor Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hopitaux de Paris.
The second study, led by Qing Xie, from the department of infectious disease at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was conducted in China and included 150 adults hospitalized with mainly mild or moderate COVID-19. Half received hydroxychloroquine in addition to standard care and the others received standard care only.
Both groups had similar rates of COVID-19 recovery after 28 days, but those who received hydroxychloroquine experienced more adverse events.

Can you say ZINC?
I’m tossing the China report on the face of it.
But there were reports on many people being saved by taking the drug so who’s right?
Can’t use really old people and call it a study.
But no more than 15mg a day according to reports.
Even the layperson understands you begin the treatment before pneumonia sets in.
These “reports” don’t mention using Zinc along with HCQ and they talk about using it on patients already seriously ill...That’s like putting a Kevlar vest on after you’ve been shot...
So that would mean more for those willing to try it right? Deniers don’t HAVE to take it.
I think most of us who have followed the HCQ protocol will agree that its best to give it to patients BEFORE they get to the stage of pneumonia. Using zinc is also a key for success.
This is the Gold Standard of treatment
Patients and families need to advocate for themselves
It has been suggested to print a copy to take to the hospital
If possible find a Dr who will work with you before you need them

The fact that they needed to stress it was “touted” by Trump tells you this is nothing more than leftist propaganda.
They seem to only be conducting studies in people with pneumonia. The protocol should be given before it gets to that point.
So if they conveniently forget zinc then they aren’t really lying, right?
You know if a person suffers a serious wound that bleeds out and a tourniquet is not applied in time, the person dies.
Does this mean tourniquets are ineffective?
With Covid-19 TIMING is everything.
Applied early, a LifeSaver
Applied too late, ineffective
They just cannot admit that it really did reduce the severity, but have to choke down the word 'significantly'. What happened to the mantra of 'even one death is too many'? I'll take a chance it will reduce the severity even if not significantly, but even a little bit. Simple wordplay.
So, they wait until their knocking on heaven’s door before trying HCQ.
If Dr. Zalenko’s Treatment really works, then not using it on a wholesale basis by all Medical Health Care is a Sacrilege at the least?
My dad sometimes has chest congestion really bad, hard to breathe, catch his breath. He takes a couple of 20mg Prednisone and it clears up in an hour or so. He calls it his miracle drug, opens his lungs right up.
