Trump Wants Chinese Parts Out of American Weapons [more in comment]

U.S. reliance on China is one of many areas discussed in a 146-page report about the health of the defense industrial base...

The report says China is the only producer of various chemicals needed in missiles and bombs, Japan and European nations are the only suppliers of certain carbon fibers used in missiles, satellites, and space rockets; Germany is the prime supplier of special vacuum tubes for night vision goggles, it says...

China is mentioned 232 times in the report, which has been been in the works for more than a year by a handful of government agencies. Much of the document’s findings and recommendations are classified because they describe areas of vulnerability in America’s supply chain...

“Reliance on single producers within the supply chain, dependence on unstable or unfriendly foreign suppliers for critical components, and misplaced presumption of continued preeminence of American military superiority are examples of findings that should be immediately addressed,” Carlisle, a retired Air Force general, said in a statement.

ATM Trump has National powers to direct our industry. Can’t he start demanding local producers make some of these weapons to combat wartime actions of China?

With what and how? Who even has the tooling and materials to make all such today, and or could so as at a competitive price?

In my opinion, China saw how integral the industrial might of the US was to winning wars, and strategized on how to take that away by largely supplanting it. It is thus China that is now equipped for a war of attrition.

America could not fight a large scale war right now. Imagine this America opposed to the Soviet Union and having the two front war doctrine.

Get China materials and products out of all sectors.

Are you serious? There would be hardly anything left, nor anyone to replace it domestically. Estimates say that Chinese suppliers make up 70-80 percent of Walmart's merchandise [for example], leaving less than 20 percent for American-made products.

Why should our enemies be making parts for our weapons??????

Likely unprofitable in a world market to do so here due to a plethora of regs and unions and Americans not willing to work as hard as their Chinese counterparts.

This article is about high tech stuff. 25 years ago I went to a sports store to buy some hiking boots. ALL the boots from ALL the manufacturers were made in China. You cannot put an army in the field without boots. So this chain of supply problem is not just high tech.

This is true. As said above, estimates are that Chinese suppliers make up 70-80 percent of Walmart's merchandise [for example], leaving less than 20 percent for American-made products.

No, it cannot, and we could not fight WW2 on its terms today, even just due to our lack of toughness of character (esp. as soldiers are young).

The process of doing so needs to involve lining up replacement sources of materials and products.

Electronic component manufacturing has essentially been outlawed in the USA. Thanks to the alphabet agencies, the EPA, EEOC, OSHA, IRS etc etc. And similar agencies in the States. Nearly 100% manufactured in the USA 50 years ago to practically 0 today.

This is what the voters voted for. Nobody should be surprised.

I want Chinese items out of American stores, too.

There are tools that we don't make anymore. Go through the Chinese-full catalogs of Harbor Freight, Northern Tools, Grizzly, and others and then see if you can find the same items made in the USA.

The shelves and websites of Home Deport, Lowes, and Menards, too. They do have more USA products it seems, but it could be more.

I think McMaster-Carr and Grainger do seem more American, but it's hard to tell for sure.

I want Americans to remember that "Made in China" is our enemy.

The Who had it figured out 40+ years ago. The WHO needs the shotgun to sing the song. They don’t get to decide.

Years ago I was a second tier manufacturing shop for Boeing, then their union pulled my work back in house. I’d love to open up a shop again if it were making munitions.

How did we ever get to this? My guess is that Congress waived procurement rules to save money.
