President Donald Trump plans to order U.S. meat processing plants facing concerns about coronavirus outbreaks to stay open to protect the countrys food supply, a senior administration official said on Tuesday.
Trump is likely to sign an executive order later in the day using the Defense Production Act to mandate that the plants continue to function, the official said.
The order is designed to give companies such as Tyson Foods Inc and others more liability protection in case employees catch the virus as a result of having to go to work.
The order will also include guidance to minimize risk to workers who are especially vulnerable to the virus, the official said.

You think it’s a low skill job based on the pay.
That’s because AMERICAN workers who USED to do these jobs have been deliberately undercut by MILLIONS of illegals willing to work for cash, off the books, for pennies on the dollar.
They are, in fact, dangerous jobs. So dangerous that Americans are unwilling to do them for what the illegals make.
So until they import MORE illegals (which is what the Tyson dude is after BTW) to do these jobs, those plants won’t be open.
By the time all this kerfluffle is over, the ORIGINAL illegals will be BACK on the job and they’ll have herd immunity.
Isn’t herd immunity the goal here?
Well, it actually involves GETTING the virus and RECOVERING from the virus.
It’s like people think herd immunity arrives as if by magic with no inconvenience to themselves.
Meanwhile, we’ll have DOUBLE the illegals.

ain’t exactly rocket surgery
People in the military EAT AS WELL!
Around here nobody makes that kind of money.
It’s $8/hr flat.
Catastrophic amputations aren’t worth $8/hr. no benefits.
Sorry.
My hubby worked in one of those plants back in the late 80’s. BEFORE Bush I sold us out. Guess what he made back then? About $8/hr. Not adjusted.
The Department of Agriculture has said there is no evidence that COVID-19 has been transmitted through food or its packing, the AP reported.
Smithfield Foods is owned by the Chinese-based WH Group. The company, which is known as Shineway Group outside of Asia, bought Smithfield Foods in 2013. WH Group is the largest pork producer in the world.
Never let a crisis go to waste.
well they sunk 2 carriers they might as well start a run on food next
sun tzu and all that jazz
If what you are trying to say in all that is that these guys should be paid better you’ll get no argument from me.
One of the biggest turnovers at packing plants, is the kill floor! For obvious reasons. The animals know they are about to die!
No, they should be kicked the hell out and all their illegal spawn as well.
these plants should be almost entirely automated.
It would save the REST of us BILLIONS on social welfare support for the families of the guys getting $8/hr who shouldn’t even BE in this country.
The plant owners don’t HAVE to bear the full costs of their workers, WE do that FOR them.
It’s WAY cheaper for US to pay for their plants to run (in associated welfare payments) than it is to just automate the plants.
As long as there are illegals and our tax dollars to feed and support them the plants will never be automated.
Thank God! I was actually worried about this. This could have been bad, but Trump took the right action to prevent it from happening.
But make no mistake, that full page ad was the first volley in a battle for MORE foreign workers that WE will end up supporting.
How do you figure that? I don't see a down side to this politically. I see a massive down side if he hadn't done it.
Why would they bring in more foreign workers to staff a shuttered plant?
Oh I don’t know, the media running stories about the people who died because he ordered them to stay open? Maybe that might hurt him, I agree, it would. Trump is in a terrible position now, he can’t win (I don’t mean reelection, there are no good choices for him now)P
U.S. approves purchase of Smithfield
The companies said in a joint statement they had received permission from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to complete the transaction, which was struck in May.
To be sure, the purchase of one American food company does not jeopardize Americas food independence. But Smithfield is our largest pork producer will China or other countries seek to purchase our largest poultry, or dairy, or corn producers next? Is it in Americas security interests if in a decade or two our food supply is 30, or 60, or 90 percent foreign owned? Stabenow wrote in an op-ed published Wednesday by POLITICO.
"They get fired then".
Seems like I've hears that workers in low-wage jobs want to be fired, since they can get $15/hour equivalent on unemployment for the next 3 months due to the stimulus law passed by Congress. They'll reduce their employability, but I don't think they care.
That part of the law was a perverse mistake. Congress tried to undo the goof the next day, but I don't think it was a goof as far as the Democrats were concerned, and it wasn't undone. Now all the slackers want unemployment, because it pays them so well. Another way to ruin the US economy, and reduce Trump's chances of reelection with it if this travesty isn't Pinned on Pelosi's Posse.
Because trump ordered them to open back up!
It’s costing Tyson bajillion dollars/day to be shut down. THESE workers are sick, Tyson needs NEW workers.
That’s the only reason Tyson took out the ad. They’re losing money and they want ‘fresh and new’ ‘not sick’ workers.
Watch this space, Tyson will get a gigantic visa allowance out of this, the rest of us will get screwed. Again.
How would YOU like it if the workers in your ‘essential’ business all caught the virus and then you were ORDERED to remain open?
I think it would be different in this case. If you quit your job at a company identified as necessary for the national defense then I doubt you would qualify for unemployment, even if fear of Covid-19 was your reason for quitting.
Was the DPA ever intended to apply to this situation, rather than the production of military hardware? If not, it doesn’t become right just because Trump did it rather than a Democrat.
“Looks like I win.”
We ALL win.
