President Donald Trump plans to order U.S. meat processing plants facing concerns about coronavirus outbreaks to stay open to protect the country’s food supply, a senior administration official said on Tuesday.

Trump is likely to sign an executive order later in the day using the Defense Production Act to mandate that the plants continue to function, the official said.

The order is designed to give companies such as Tyson Foods Inc and others more liability protection in case employees catch the virus as a result of having to go to work.

The order will also include guidance to minimize risk to workers who are especially vulnerable to the virus, the official said.

National Guard or regular Army going to staff? Not denigrating the current workers, but except for being a lousy job, I’m sure our troops can do as well or better, if the others all call in sick.

-- I don't see government micromanaging it at all. --

I didn't mean in the sense of activily running day to day operations. I mant in the sense of commandeering.

This supply chain disruption (if hands off) isn't life threatening except in some abstact and removed sense.

JUDY WOODRUFF: One year ago this month, a Chinese company bought America’s largest pork producer, Smithfield Foods. The $4.7 billion deal is the biggest Chinese acquisition of a U.S. company to date.

Meanwhile, China has taken OVER the U.S. companies in THEIR country.

The President has this kind of power? He shouldnt - whether he does or not.

Yes because mass starvation is so much better an option! Honest to God what is wrong with you people? Your liberties are already gone! We all surrendered those for security and safety, ignoring our fore fathers warnings. You are worried about someone trying to keep people fed?

Nothing very scandalous about it, simply what is required.

Pretty much my take on it as well, thanks!

What's the problem? Just get The USDA and OSHA to do their jobs.

Oh. Wait. Not sure that will help. Might make things worse.

If China owns the companies, then THEY can mess with the supply chain. NEVER give your enemy that kind of leverage over you.

We don’t have to worry about dems/libs doing it to us, even though we know they’d like to to control us. But I guess they don’t care how it’s done but that it’s done.

And they probably think they can ride it out when everything collapses and the Chi-coms take over. Like the Chi-coms will spare them.

It is indeed a threat to our national security to have our major food supply chain shut down.

We are already significantly weakened by this virus and cutting off food will only make us more vulnerable.

Part VII and VIII refer to agriculture

Although no one ever really expected it, poisoning a nation’s food or water supplies is a violation of the Geneva Convention . Add to China’s charges.

Workers calling in sick all over.

They get fired then. Work or starve. These are industries that Trump has said are necessary for the national defense. There are no sick-outs. No walk-outs. Show up for work or there's the door. And if the workers quit for any reason, even fear of Covid-19, then I doubt they qualify for unemployment.
