Swedens government is continuing its unusual coronavirus strategy of refusing to implement a lockdown, saying that people in the country are doing a good enough job of staying apart even as places like bars and restaurants remain open.
The country defied much of the rest of the world by not introducing lockdown measures forcing people to stay apart.
Its actions also went against almost all of the rest of Europe, where the worst-hit countries have put extreme restrictions on people leaving their homes and most others have at least closed bars and restaurants and limited gatherings of people.
It also contrasts hugely with neighboring Denmark, which put restrictions in place even before its first death and is now slowly lifting restrictions.

Compare Sweden to Denmark. Denmark implemented strict rules, Sweden didn’t.
Denmark has 5 million people and 247 deaths from coronavirus.
Sweden has 10 million and 900 deaths from coronavirus
They have kept their economy largely afloat and have a slightly higher death rate than we do at this point.
If they don’t start showing a massive spike pretty soon, I would say their strategy has been more successful than ours.
So nine hospitalizations for every ten thousand people.
Sweden’s made an outstanding decision.
Meanwhile, Americans can’t trust each other to not throw a walmart stocker off a friggen ladder when they’re trying to restock the toilet paper.
Sweden, with their 86 deaths/million population is higher than the U.S. with its 57 deaths/million population. Sweden also has a relatively 956 total cases/million population. They may still be on the upward swing of the curve. They had better not wave their flag yet.
People should doubt the ability of the health care system to treat them. Skepticism is healthy and often right. No one should want to get a disease or want to end up in the hospital. Everyone should take personal precautions against contracting an illness.
None of that justifies a lockdown. These are issues of personal responsibility.
The economy will certainly be impacted by individual changes in personal behavior but not as badly as under a blanket lockdown. If individuals and businesses are allowed to find creative solutions to dealing with the virus, the economy will be much healthier.
Hospitals already know how to expand their facilities in a crisis. It is not the kind of thing that has never happened before. And, at this point, the lockdown has gone on long enough that facilities HAVE been expanded and extra equipment has been obtained. Currently the situation across most of America is the opposite of a shortage, it is a glut of unused hospital capacity. There is no longer any justification to continue the lockdown on the basis of a shortage of hospital facilities.
The lockdown is a classic case of boiling the frog. At first it’s we need one month to ramp up hospital facilities. Then the lockdown gets extended and the rationale shifted. Then it gets extended again. Occasionally someone blurts out we might need to lockdown until we have a “vaccine.” And we know scientists say that could take over a year. If this was sold as a one-year-lockdown upfront few would have accepted that as a national strategy. We most certainly are getting played. Not saying it’s a conspiracy outright, but the combination of panic combined with living in “CYA” lawyer-land where everyone is afraid of “one more death” leading to them being ruined by lawsuits or smeared by the media is proving to be toxic to our national policy.

Compare Sweden to Michigan. They both have a population of 10 million.
MI cases 22,780 , 1,281 deaths.
But...Sweden doesn’t have a Detoilet.
Sweden is mostly white ethnically.
Parts of Michigan are mostly something else.
It does seem that the Corona virus has a greater impact on minority populations of a non European nature.
I know that sounds racist but I think culturally that northern Europeans are kind of standoffish and anti social. American inner city ethnic minorities are very much in close contact with each other socially. Lots and lots of intermingling on a continuous basis. Detroit has so many problems and so many vectors for disease and infection and violence.
I just love how the media says we can’t even propose the concept that the disease might affect different ethnicities differently. Yet we know throughout proven medical science, genetic factors play a huge factor in diseases, e.g.:
“Sickle cell disease affects blacks almost exclusively. About 10% of blacks in the United States have one copy of the gene for sickle cell disease (that is, they have sickle cell trait).”
And, yes, this has to do with immunity, not just genetic diseases. Immunity is as genetic as any other part of our biology.
“Europeans, Africans have different immune systems, and Neanderthals are partly to thank”

“It’s long been clear that people from different parts of the world differ in their susceptibility to developing infections as well as chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Now, two studies reported in Cell on October 20 show that those differences in disease susceptibility can be traced in large part to differences at the genetic level directing the way the immune systems of people with European and African ancestry are put together.”
Sweden is a separate country and demographically distinct from Michigan
Exactly right. Sweden took measured at acceptable risks and as a result they have acceptable loss is well worth the suffering they spared by saving their economy.
The National Board of Health and Welfare ('Socialstyrelsen') confirmed that there is no preparedness storage and nothing to distribute to the health care sector

Sweden does have the advantage of, most likely, a generally more disciplined population than the US. And, at least in Stockholm, the posted article says 50% of the population is said to be working from home. I doubt we could do that in most (if any) US cities.
“Sweden is a separate country and demographically distinct from Michigan”
Really?/sarc
Correction: 50% of Stockholm’s residents are said to be working from home.
Im with you on that
