Is America a Roaring Giant or Crying Baby?

Marshal Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto commanded the Imperial Japanese Navy in World War II until he was killed in April 1943. Despite the dialogue from the 1970 WWII film "Tora! Tora! Tora!" Yamamoto probably did not say in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

But Yamamoto likely either wrote or said something similar: "I can run wild for six months ... after that, I have no expectation of success."

Yamamoto summed up a general feeling among the Japanese admirals that the huge industrial capacity of the U.S. -- which had been asleep during the Great Depression -- along with the righteous anger and frenzy of an aroused American democracy would ensure the destruction of the Japanese Empire in short order.

They were right.

In 1940, there were fewer than 500,000 service members in the U.S. military. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, that number had grown to nearly 2.2 million. By 1945, more than 12 million Americans were in the armed services. It was an astonishing mobilization for a nation of fewer than 140 million people.

The U.S. started the war with seven fleet aircraft carriers and one escort carrier. By war's end, it was deploying 27 fleet and 72 escort carriers.

The U.S. Navy ended the war with a fleet eight times larger than it was at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The American armada would become larger in total tonnage than all the world's fleets in 1945 combined.

“Under 60=crying baby”

That is just stupidly simplistic and a tad arrogant.

That was the response when America was still America. Now it is “lockdown”, “shelter in pllace”, “social distance” etc.

Forget about the young people. After seeing the pathetic cowardice on display among older people right here on FR, I’d say most FReepers have lost all credibility when it comes to criticizing others for their toughness in the face of adversity.

Needed a repeat.

It's a bit long to use as my new tag line, but otherwise, A+

Just as an aside, for a great read on the overall Pacific War from the Solomns to the finish, I highly recommend:

I think you’re right, alas. I have been amazed not only by their fear, panic and longing for authoritarianism, but by their haste to turn on other Freepers and attack them for not going along with the panic.

Psalm 127 & Isaiah 9:10

This nation of arrogant hypocrites really believes we can do this ‘on our own’ without the Blessings of the Sovereign Lord. America will share the fate of Assyria, Babylon, & Rome.

Roaring Giant? ROTFLOL....

We can scapegoat and play the blame game. We can talk not of an America in crisis, but of the virus' effects on particular groups. We can decide that it is mean or even racist and xenophobic to hold the Chinese government accountable for its swath of viral destruction -- and so we will not.

The issue is with the media, not with the people.

Just stop with that crap. FYI Japan beat the crap out of China. Everything they have they have to copy from someone else. Over centuries they have murdered anyone with an innovative mind or they have escaped to other countries.

Communism does not foster creativity, even our own form of it.

Define tough.

Most freeper are not only tough, but some of us have brains. We don’t need Rush to tell us what to think.

What I do see is a bunch of babies who cannot sit still for four weeks. What I see is a bunch of fools who are greedy, who wish to run back to the bar—everyone else be damned. I see a bunch of people who simply cannot grasp the fact that staying home and keeping your distance is directly related to the reduction in the spread. They see the lower numbers and they want to run outside and play...like a frustrated six year old.

The rest of us are willing to be patient and carry the additional tax burdens over the coming years to make sure everyone gets through this.

And in the end...no one on friggin’ Free Republic is going to change anything. So, until we are “allowed out”, stop pacing like a pissed off monkey in a cage, pick up a book and relax. In a couple of months this will be a distant memory.

Thank you Rummyfan for the recommendation. I just ordered this for my 90 year old Korean War vet dad who enjoys military history.

The response is going to be epic.

1) Hollywood will go into a temporary recession as it restructures away from China. China temporarily allowed Hollywood to continue to ignore middle America. After this, it will have no choice but to at least attempt to meet middle American tastes.

2) While not all companies will de-couple, the majority will This will send the Chicom economy into a tailspin. And it won’t just be US companies.

3) This is a wakeup call to American chem/bio homeland defenses, medical, and related areas. Trump won’t let this “crisis go to waste.”

4) Silently, while all this has been happening, Space Force has been active. No, the Chicoms ain’t gonna beat us to space. We will begin to return heavy lift to the USA.

5) If Xi thought the last trade negotiations were tough, wait til he sees the new list of demands.

6) There will be some reparations from this. Retaliation may be silent, but there will be a price exacted.

Pride goeth before a fall. Believing a myth of American superiority is because of American people is dangerous. America was not great because it was good. America was/is great because God had this land in his protective hand.

You must either be retired, a government worker, or currently working in an ‘essential’ business - in other words, you have INCOME.

There are MILLIONS of people out of work NOW. They’re not ‘greedy’ or wanting to run to ‘the bar’ - they need to go back to WORK. For rent, utilities, food for their families

They won’t survive a couple months, while you pick up a book and relax. Huzzah for you.

Despicable.

It’s been three weeks.

Even when I was broke, I could manage three weeks. The fact that I planned and prepared to the point I could retire early (never worked for the government) is a testament to my personal declaration that I wouldn’t be poor again.

Have you no savings? Haven’t you applied for unemployment, plus the $600/week? You should get your $2400 per household next week.

Every business that I do business with has reached out to tell me they can skip payments without penalty, or interest only payments. If I took them up on it, my cash flow would be groceries and Internet.

Talk to me in June. The entire world is shut down. Based on the parts and products we are importing, manufacturing is not coming back soon. The supply chain is ruined.

We could open up tomorrow, and within a week everyone would be home again.

Based on the valence and excitement (fear) I read in posts, I can only come to the conclusion that a lot of people on this forum had no savings, high debt, had never been unemployed, and who don’t take “charity.”

Go sign up for the benefits. Pay your employees, collect your $600 extra, and wait for another couple of weeks. As I tell my daughter who is freaking out...this is not just happening to YOU. It’s happening to everyone. You think you are the only ones going through this. You are not. We will be fine.

Complaining about on a web site is not going to change anything.
