I did some demo on my house this past year and I can say they helped but I was still cleaning my system out for a few days after.
I laughed a couple of weeks ago when people were hoarding masks and all I could think was I hope they get a higher grade than what I used. Cleaning out the barn I found the box of masks, all N95.
If a mask will reduce the transmission by just 2%, I’ll take it over nothing.

These things are not 100% effective, but they are better than slobbering all over each other.

This seems to point up the issue with the masks themselves and how they are handled and contained. Reuse, even once without thoroughly disinfecting, is not a good idea. I see far too many people in the stores touchy their faces and masks. That itself is probably worse because of the likely concentration of any viruses on the external side of the masks.

How far away were the petri dishes? The original paper does not say. If they are one foot away, it's no surprise they got infected.
A mask can probably stop a 100 mph sneeze from sending aerosols 30 feet. Maybe they attenuate the sneeze and limit the trajectory and distance to 2 or 3 feet. If so, that would be valuable.
This strikes me as not very useful research. They should have put petri dishes at 1 foot intervals to 6 feet, then 2 foot intervals the next 6 feet, then 5 foot intervals out to 30 feet.
Wear two of the surgical masks at once.
