I did some demo on my house this past year and I can say they helped but I was still cleaning my system out for a few days after.
I laughed a couple of weeks ago when people were hoarding masks and all I could think was I hope they get a higher grade than what I used. Cleaning out the barn I found the box of masks, all N95.

Maybe an additional home made liner inside the N95 will be the difference provided air can still be drawn.
By the way those with N95 masks, recycle. 30 minutes in an 160 degree oven will kill the virus assuming it is present.Mine only goes down to 170 but no issues with degrading the rubber bands after trying it.
