“vtoo naive or too stupid to be a commanding officer of a ship”

Bingo! And thankfully he no longer is. The seamen onboard the Roosevelt had better get their heads straight or they are too stupid or naive to serve as well.

“Mr. Modly saying that sailors were expected to “keep their shit together and take care of each other.” At another point, Mr. Modly, addressing fears over the virus, said: “If the ship was in combat and there were hypersonic missiles coming at it, you’d be pretty f——— scared too.” ...

“If he didn’t think, in my opinion, that this information wasn’t going to get out into the public, in this information age we live in, then he was either too naive or too stupid to be a commanding officer of a ship like this.” “The alternative is he did this on purpose, which is a serious violation” of military law, he said.

I can’t imagine a Navy Secretary under Obama delivering such remarks.

These sailors need to put on their big boy skivvies. I question whether the Captain did this as a back-handed means of getting to Trump, not unlike Vindman.

The Captain is duty-bound to honor and respect his chain of command. If he can’t do this in peacetime, I question what he would do in a fire fight.

And now the crew is breaking protocol by talking about this announcement to the media.

Seriously?

Start dumping people and bring in a new crew ASAP.

I took an ass chewing one time for something I didn’t do.

This Colonel “locked my heels” and chewed me up one side and down the other.

When he was done, I told him that it wasn’t me who did it.

He looked at me from behind his desk and said,

“You probably had an ass chewing coming for something else anyway. Now, get out of here.”

Why did the SecNav jump over 4 senior admirals in the chain of command to get his power focused on a mere captain who he accused of jumping the chain of command himself? That decision should have been left to lower echelon brass.

I agree. Is amazing to me how a virus (which has very limited effect on young healthy sailors) and some deep-state politics has neutralized America’s most expensive weapons system.

Very straight talk is what that crew needed! And the profanity was appropriate. He was talking to a Navy crew and those are terms they understand.

I met Thomas Modly on February 29th at the memorial service to Donald Stratton, who survived the attack on the USS Arizona. He gave a very good eulogy.

I’m not sure the crew needed an address to explain the Navy’s action. It’s a management decision between the Navy and the Captain.

If they needed to explain anything to the crew, it should have been brief and all business. Maybe pointed instruction privately to the ranking officers and CPOs about how to handle their predicament going forward until
the new CO is piped aboard. IMO.

So apparently a large part, perhaps the large majority, of the crew viewed the former CO was a popular and well respected leader. Now the Secretary of the Navy has just told them they are naïve and stupid. Wonder what that does for morale?

Having risen to the lofty (Army) rank of SP5 I can't claim any familiarity with the world of "field grade" officers. However,I know enough to know that the major transgression (perhaps the only transgression) was leaking this letter to the press. My hunch is that a respectful letter sent to his superiors probably wouldn't have been a problem if standard security procedures were followed.

But going to the press? Nope...that won't fly (no pun intended).

Assuming that the Captain has 20+ years in he'll draw a comfortable pension and will probably be lobbying Senators and Congressmen before you can say "working lunch".

Sending the letter outside of the chain of command was inappropriate. Further, this address was also inappropriate.

Since you can’t put 5000 people in hotels, he or (obviously) his replacement will have to find a way to deal with it on the ship. Coming up with a solution was his job. Instead he complained publicly about having to do his job.

Since its a nuke, it has to be manned flu or no flu.

Since in theory there is no safer place to be during an epidemic than aboard a ship in the middle of the ocean, how it got aboard may be his fault too.

So, now we have leaks from shipboard intercom messages? THIS is a major job for NIS and DIA. How was this obtained?

And, take a look at the ARMY mechanized armor general who served under Schwartzkopf in Iraq war I-— now retired and a Council on Foreign Relations Biden’s “VP” supporter apparatchik along the lines of General Wesley Clark. A.... tool. Look at who is tweeting— CNN posts. Knows NOTHING about Carrier Groups, or operation of a modern aircraft carrier-— in a Strike Group-— but his “tanker”mind is commanding his stupid tongue. He does know better about Chain of Command— but now he’s a tool and paid DNC payee obviously. What an embarrassment, the John McCain downline, leftover from the GHWBush era Kuwait operation. A TOOL.

Ignoring the FACTS of 30 emails of this letter that was released-— leaked to press, and we have yet to know how this was possible. Hey, Barry— would you have BROADCAST your “end run” Storm.. before Schwartzkopf’s national broadcast well after the attack (on a 3rd rate holy terror Iraqi Republican Guard.... honestly, paper tiger).
