Ilya from Michigan writes . . .
If youd have met me three weeks ago, youd unequivocally know my stance on guns. I was not only against the ownership of AR-15s, I was in the minority of folks who thought all private gun ownership should be illegal.
Fast forward to today: I own a GLOCK 19 Gen5.
Im still in a bit of disbelief that there is a dangerous weapon in my house: one that more frequently contributes to accidental deaths, violent homicides, and suicides, rather than the romanticized personal protection experiences.
What happened? The world changed overnight and my opinion evolved.
Ive always been a strongly opinionated person, but I pride myself on the idea that my beliefs are loosely held. Strong opinions are great, but what you dont want is to be egotistically blinded by them. I dont want to be held hostage by a belief that is no longer valid, given new information. My views before
I live a pretty privileged existence. My family lives in one of the most affluent communities in Michigan. Everyone in the neighborhood leaves their doors open with bikes on the front lawn. Rarely do we worry about anything being stolen, let alone violent crime. I wasnt born with this privilege, but worked really hard to get where I am.
Circumstances shape peoples understanding of the world, and my situation highly influenced my views on gun ownership. There was no argument, be it constitutional, personal protection, safety, hunting, or anything else that would change my mind and stop me from logically deconstructing your argument.

Glock’s a bad choice for a first time owner.
Typical liberal. So above everyone else with the high and mighty ideals. So disdainful of everyone else’s views.
Until feels personally threatened...then it’s Katie bar the door I’m getting me a gun!
I wonder if he/she/it has found the safety on that clock /s
100% correct. = Between my 2 brothers & I we have over 200 firearms from flintlocks to MBR.
FUNNY THING though, NOT even one of those firearms (in over 2 decades) has broken out of the gun-vault, run out into the street & fired itself.

“Expanding on your point, many anti gun people dont want you to have guns, precisely because it may make you less likely to be intimidated into compliance with their future plans.”
What he said,.
DO NOT TOUCH THAT WEAPON UNTIL YOU HAVE SOMEONE FAMILIARIZE YOU WITH IT! And never go looking for the intruder with your lack of training. Seclude yourself in locked room and call 911.
I really wish so called conservatives would stop posting garbage like this.
First, a handgun is a fine choice for home defense and in no way shows ignorance. A handgun is much more versatile since it can be carried upon your body and in a car and remain easily accessible, something a shotgun can't do. I have a Glock on my nightstand and an AR-15 in my corner. Given time I'll go for the AR but the Glock will do until I can get it. My shotguns are in the gun safe until dove season.
You familiarize yourself with something by reading the instruction booklet that comes with the firearm, taking it apart and putting it back together, and using it. You do NOT familiarize yourself with something by not touching it and treating it like it's got coronavirus. Obviously it should be unloaded when you're getting to know your pistol but treating a firearm like it's got the cooties so you're scared to touch it isn't how you learn how to handle one. Read, take it apart, watch some youtube videos, do dry fire drills in front of the TV, all those things are how you get familiar with your firearm.
Yes, by all means get someone who's a shooter to teach you some pointers. This hysteria that people need to be terrified of guns needs to stop though. They're just tools, learn them and respect them but the gun control nuts are winning when they have everyone convinced you're a danger to mankind just because there's a gun in the room with you. Respect them, don't fear them.
I think it’s more because she’s never heard those stats.
Liberals love to throw out the FBI stats about rates of “gun incidents” are several times higher in homes with firearms vs. without.
It might be true but probably also related to suicide.
In their circles they never hear about gun use in a positive context. They think it’s rare.
My first ownership came right after Katrina. I covered the territory so I figure I’d better carry. Problem with purchasing one, you end up buying a lot more. It’s sort of an addiction. Ha-ha.
All Stay Safe.
I believe it. Everyone worries about printing like most people will be able to immediately tell you are carrying if there is even the slightest buldge. Reality is that most people don’t pay much attention...it’s your fellow CCW holders that will most often be able to tell, not your average Joe in the supermarket.
It’s a start.

The story is pure bull $h!t.
Ah, Georgia. I love my state.
I still have a crush on Princess Vespa. I’d ri..... nevermind, this is a family friendly site...
SPOT ON.
I was an Army Rangemaster for over 2 decades & believe that a person’s FIRST firearm should be a double-barrel or pump shotgun AND that the new owner should get PROFESSIONAL TRAINING to store, maintain, load & operate their new shotgun SAFELY.
(MOST new owners will be COMPETENT with a double-barrel or pump shotgun with no more than 2-3 hours of PROFESSIONAL COACHING.)
AFTER they learn to use their shotgun SAFELY & believe that they NEED a handgun, I recommend a quality .38SPL or .357MAG REVOLVER, with PROPER PROFESSIONAL TRAINING for its use, too.
(MOST new handgun owners will need 8 hours of less PROFESSIONAL TRAINING with their new revolver, to be competent & safely use their handgun.)
Just my OPINION, TMN78247

Correct. I’m sure this idiot thinks his new Glock will stand up on its own and shoot him. Guns kill people..
Im still in a bit of disbelief that there is a dangerous weapon in my house.

Shes right. There is a dangerous weapon in her house. And she is it. She probably knows nothing about the Glock and probably might end up doing her self some harm.
Dear Ilya from Michigan :
The “gun” is always loaded.
You’re welcome.
5.56mm
On my Glock 30, I keep looking for that thing that makes the cocking sound every time it's drawn on TV shows.
PERSONALLY, I would NOT own a “plastic Glock” IF the company started giving them away, as I regard them as “potentially dangerous” for use by anyone but an expert handgunner.
When the DC METRO POLICE started issuing Glock pistols, there were several PROVEN cases, during the first month of issue, of the pistols DISCHARGING WHILE IN THE ISSUED DUTY HOLSTER, when LEOs simply entered/exited their patrol car.
