Retail giant Walmart on Friday announced changes to its retail stores across the country. The changes are geared to protect staff and customers from the Wuhan coronavirus.
"While many of our customers have been following the advice of the medical community regarding social distancing and safety, we have been concerned to still see some behaviors in our stores that put undue risk on our people," Dacona Smith, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, said in a post on the company's website. "We want to encourage customers to bring the fewest number of people per family necessary to shop, allow for space with other customers while shopping, and practice social distancing while waiting in lines. Were also seeing states and municipalities set varying policies regarding crowd control which has created some confusion regarding shopping."
Beginning Saturday, the number of customers will be limited to five customers per 1,000 square feet, which is about 20 percent of a store's capacity. How many people will be allowed in each store will vary depending on the individual store's size.
Each store will only have one entry and one exit. At that entrance, employees will count the number of people going into the store to make sure the 20 percent capacity rule is followed. Additional customers will be allowed in as others leave the building, following a one-in, one-out pattern.
The company is also implementing a one-way movement throughout each store. There will be floor markers and employees directing customers to make sure the pattern is followed.
Walmart has taken other precautions, like installing sneeze guards at registers, closing stores overnight to conduct deep cleaning and restocking shelves. The company has also begun taking employees' temperatures to monitor for potential cases of the Wuhan coronavirus. Walmart is also making gloves and masks available to employees who wish to wear them.
now its getting just too wierd and silly. A test run for what “they” can di to us.
This policy will have people thinking we are living under the old Soviet Union. Long lines for bread and milk, lots of empty shelves, and rationing of toilet paper.
How long will people wait before the thugs start butting in front of lines, fights breaking out and increased looting?
All exits are open for emergency use.
The new normal. Waiting in line for everything else. Very socialism like.
Just wait for hurricane season!
Not a bad line,
Costco here in Poway
had a Hundred in line!
.
Oh well.
Obammys’
Swine flu had Him
Golfing,,,
He did change the
Name to H1N1.
I don’t know if this policy impacts the senior citizen policy that they have.
From March 24 through April 28, Walmart stores will host an hour-long
senior shopping event every Tuesday for customers aged 60 and older.
This will start one hour before the store opens.
To get to WM in time for 60+ shopping I would have to get up at 4 am and out on the dark roads soon after. I have trouble driving in the dark and try to avoid when I can (lots of deer too). No one to go in my place. Personal Shopper for hire sounds like a new career for enterprising folks.
So although the severe restrictions to our liberty serve a short-term -- and acknowledged necessary and important purpose to spread out the rate of infection so as not to overload our medical facilities, setting aside for a moment the devestating effects these restrictions are having on our economy and on society the price we'll pay -- which has been given little attention until the past day or two -- is that these draconian measures will have little effect on the total number of infections.
Medical professionals are now saying that this Chinese virus will run its course no matter what we do to "flatten the curve" which means, in basic mathematical terms, that while the rate of infection has slowed (a very good thing) the area under the "infection curve" is not expected to change; it will just spread out over a significantly longer time (a very bad thing).
wonder how the Fire Marshal will react to that?
The others would be available to get out if needed.
On the other hand it would also be a great time for a startup to think about a similar type of big box retail store to launch a competitor to Wall Mart. Do things like ignore this nonsense, focus on buying American products where possible, etc. In a nutshell, do all the things that so many people dislike about Walmart.
Walmart better be careful as I see JCpenny in their future.
Markets in my region are back to fairly normal crowds;
but the shelves lack many items, and for some, quantities that you can purchase are limited.
Water and pizza are available (but not much by way of paper goods, except for the more expensive brands of tissue paper.)
“My worry is that other stores are going to follow suit making this situation even worse.”
On Thursday, Costco was frickin’ insane with a line going around the building 15 minutes before opening.
Please, God, let this this be over quickly!!
Costco has done similar and while I havent quit them altogether Ive changed from every two weeks to every three weeks and I may crank it down further.
I am not into waiting in line to get in anywhere.
Still more than I was willing to deal with.
There are other options.
“Ill go to the over 60 shopping period/day, Tuedsays 6:00am to 7:00am.”
We did that last week. It was civilized and quasi-normal. These new policies were not in effect then. We can be “dug in” for at least two weeks now, but will do without bananas and lettuce. :(
I went to my Walmarts first one two weeks ago. I'll go again Tuesday. I agree very civil and orderly. I got my prescriptions filled at the same time...I was the only person in the drug/pharmacy area.
I was planning to go to WM tomorrow morning pick up few items. It is miserable cold and rainy out there. I dread having to stand outside getting soaked. This can lower a person’s resistence to viruses.
Others, yup.
I drove 2 Miles
To a Stater Brothers,
Got everything for
Mom and sister’s
Grocery run with
No lines or pressure.
.
Madness of Crowds,
What ya gonna do?
