Dr. Anthony Fauci says that if he were treating a patient with coronavirus, he would prescribe hydroxychloroquine. On Tuesday, Gov. Steve Sisolak made it illegal for your personal doctor to do just that.
The move could have deadly consequences for Nevadans battling the virus.
There is no cure for coronavirus, but there is anecdotal evidence that hydroxychloroquine can help those who are sick. The medication has been in use for decades to treat lupus and malaria.
Doctors around the world have noticed that coronavirus patients taking hydroxychloroquine have done significantly better. Studies from France and China have shown promising results. Writing in The Wall Street Journal, two Kansas doctors said theyre using the drug to treat coronavirus and proactively giving it to front-line medical workers.
Last week, President Donald Trump touted the drug as having shown very, very encouraging early results.
On Tuesday, a Philadelphia radio host asked Fauci if he would prescribe hydroxychloroquine to a patient with coronavirus. Fauci leads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and his thoughts are widely respected.
Fauci said of course he would prescribe the drug, particularly if people have no other option. He went on: Physicians throughout the country can prescribe that in an off-label way. Which means they can write it for something it was not approved for.
Not in Nevada. On Tuesday, Sisolak signed an emergency regulation prohibiting doctors outside of hospitals from prescribing that drug and a similar one, chloroquine. His justification is to prevent shortages and a run on the drugs.
A prescription for chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine may not be issued, filled or dispensed to an outpatient for a COVID-19 diagnosis, the rule states.

Dr. Kevorkian would make a better governor.
Uh, yeah. Dr. sissypants made that declaration quite a few days ago. Being the chief surgeon of NevaDUH and all. And, ain’t no way he was bright enough to come up with that himself.
Governor has no authority to do this.
Even the FDA does not tell doctors how to practice medicine.
Gov. Death wants there to be a tall pile of bodies for democrats to stand/dance on while campaigning against Orange Man Bad.
By ANY means necessary.
Did you think they don’t mean what they say?
Why do state legislatures exist? Governors just write the laws they want, right?
The Governator needs to be welded into a cell somewhere close by.
Democrat governor meddles in what doctors can prescribe to patients. Elect Democrats, get what you deserve.
How many died in his state since he’s ordered that? Arrest the man for negligent homicide!
What immediate recourse to people have to punish these governors? This is unacceptable.
Every doctor in that state should defy him- civil disobedience, for the obvious good of the state- Let him arrest everyone that defies him- let him fill the jails with doctors and nurses- that’ll go over real well in his state-
The possibility of being illegally robbed of your license and career with no good recourse, and a life long stigma even after frighteningly expensive years in court to recover it might give a lot of doctors and pharmacists pause.
Just do it.
Governor a cadaveri eccellenti. God forbid someone perishes for want of this drug...and can’t get it. Victim’s family may know somebody who knows somebody.
This will be a crash course in DEMOCRATS ARE CROOKS for these blue state ppl who continue to vote like idiots
You have more faith in the typical democrat voter than I do. *sigh*
We are getting close to the point where these stupid governors will be told to sit down and shut up. We are getting real close to a national uniform policy and procedure to dealing with this due to its nature.
My body, my choice, Mr. Democrat Governor.
You can get right the Hell out of my doctor’s office, because you were not invited, and you are not welcome at all.
Prostitution is legal in the state of Nevada, so their governor has every right to be a whore to Big Pharma.
Other than ‘after the fact’ jailing of doctors or voting the governors out, if you really are sick or have a sick friend or relative in a state where the governor has banned the drug, what can you do to get the needed medicine? You can’t just let your loved one die and then sue or just cry after they’re dead when the medicine is available.
What can be done if they are already actually sick?
At a certain point verified anecdotes turn into statistics which eventually turns into a probability leading to, one hopes, a certainty.
