A recovered Washington state COVID-19 patient joined "The Story" Thursday to detail her husband's personal experience with the experimental antiviral drug remdesivir, after President Trump said it was being eyed as a potential treatment for the coronavirus.
Susan Kane told host Martha MacCallum her husband tested positive after returning home from a business trip to Florida. When she heard a local hospital was using remdesivir on an experimental basis, she was willing to give it a try.
"When my husband started to get very sick, I just thought, thats where I want to take him. We could have gone to about four different hospitals, but I wanted to take him to Providence [Regional Medical Center in Everett, Wash.], because I heard the first patient survived. I didnt know why, but I heard that he survived," she said.
In a press conference Thursday, Trump and FDA commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn described several approaches under testing, such as chloroquine, a drug long used to treat malaria, and remdesivir, which is being tried in at least five separate experiments.
Susan Kane, who also tested positive for the virus but experienced minor symptoms, said her husband began to feel better almost immediately.
"He was admitted on Monday. He was given his first dose on Tuesday. By Wednesday, he was improving dramatically," she said. "His fever went down from 103 to just under 100. By that night, he said that it didnt feel as tight or as much pressure on his chest."
Susan said her husband continues to improve "every day," and that he has since returned home to complete his recovery.

Smart Lady. Bravo to you.
Compassionate Use got this drug to him. Thank you President Trump for thinking outside the box.
Trump may need these survivors in front of the camera soon...
Good for her. You must pay attention to these bits of information. It can mean life or death.
I hope by next week there are thousands that have the same story. It would be helpful to know how many of the confirmed cases are under hospital care.
The number of patients in the hospital or will need hospital care is the main reason for the extreme measures taken by states to close businesses.
CNN/NBC say this is just false hope. Pukes.
Not being a completely new drug, quinine (of which chloroquine is one synthetic version) is not only more widely available but also much cheaper. Hopefully that works well enough for most people.

Like tomorrow, please. My portfolio is on life support.
Very happy for her husband’s recovery! But, I can’t help but notice that when this “experimental” drug is successful it is hailed far and wide. Yet, when Hydrochloroquine proves just as successful it’s success is downplayed and in many cases sneered at.
HCQ has also shown to be a successful Prophylactic. And, it’s only 5 cents a tablet. Could it be possible that the 5 cents a tablet is a factor in the apparent prejudice against it?
Why? is your sky falling again? this is one case, chill.
Let the other experiments happen first.
They ought to add another category: Cutting through red tape bullshit invented by bureaucrats who have nothing better to do.
I suspect that the FDA and CDC and NIH are heavily lobbied by the companies with "new" drugs.
A minor correction, while Hydrochloroquine is proving successful, it is that in concert with Azithromycin that is most successful. Both are drugs that are in existence with no need to await an “experimental” drug. I haven’t seen a price per tablet of Azithromycin published anywhere yet.
More bad news for #Trumpisfinished group.
Maybe. But the demand will go up very rapidly and pharma can boost the price a bit as they will need to take more profitable but less demand drugs out of production to put the chlorquine in production.
A lot of them are here spreading panic as well. Always with their hand wringing. Tiresome.
yep - people who are less financially secure, do not vote (let alone for the incumbent)
Trump has to install some hope in this process amidst the tide of negative reporting
