Thursday night Seema Verma, one of the top members of the White House coronavirus task force and the current head of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, repeatedly dodged when Fox News Martha MacCallum grilled her over possible ventilator shortages.
Tucker Carlson was so stunned by that exchange he invited Verma on his show Friday night and opened by saying, I watched that exchange last night, and I must be honest with you, I was really troubled by it. Because you were asked a direct question by Martha MacCallum, do we have enough ventilators in ICU units, and you appeared to intentionally not answer it, so Im going to ask you that question again and hope that we will be reassured by the answer. Do we have enough ventilators to treat a surge in cases coronavirus right now, do you believe?
We have stockpile of ventilators. So right now today we are able to address people that need ventilators, Verma said. Our strategy though is to not make the situation worse, but there is a stockpile of ventilators. The president talked about ventilators today and said were going to purchase more to make sure that we have that backup supply.
Carlson pressed on specifics, asking, Can you put some meat on those bones and give us a sense of how many ventilators are in place? How many are in the stockpile? How many do you think we will need?

TY. Honestly it’s getting harder and harder to find. Merely clips or buried to oblivion.
Algorithms and worse are making searches incredibly frustrating, thank you.
TY, never seen this link. Appreciated.
Went on 17-day Panama Canal cruise, started Feb. 5, got off ship on Feb. 22. On Feb. 19, started with sore throat, cough and fatigue. No shortness of breath. My five cruisemates also got sick with the same symptoms, but one did exhibit shortness of breath.
Got home and self-quarantined, went to Dr. Feb. 25, and she prescribed Doxycyclene, which did not alleviate symptoms. After five days, Dr. called and sent me for chest X-ray, which showed pneumonia. She then prescribed Levaquin, which I took for one week. Finished with Levaquin this past Monday, and am feeling much better.
Other than definite diagnosis of pneumonia, I don't know and no doubt never will know, whether it was Wuhan virus. I'm a 75-year old female, non-smoker, grateful that I have no underlying health issues.
I like both Martha & Tucker, but its pointless, antagonistic question.
I like them as well. Martha is usually better than that. Tucker is often chasing an irrelevant rabbit. I agree its a misguided question but it did uncover someone who shouldnt be a spokesperson.
First try Tucker Carlson. If that doesn't work try Tucker Carlson and the date, Tucker Carlson 3/13/20 If you put that term in and it comes up with Tucker Carlson Tonight FULL 3/13/20 - Breaking Fox News March 13, 2020 or something similar but the show is only a couple of seconds long you are too late. It's already been deleted for copyright violations.
Thats a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-dont question and I wouldnt have answered it, either.
The follow-up would be, for a yes answer, How many is enough?. The answer to this, no matter the number, would cause panic.
The follow-up for a response of No would be immediate panic: Why not? How many cases do you expect us to have? OMG!!!, etc...
Avoiding panic is important.
Panic is going to get people hurt and, maybe, killed.
Ive thought of the British and their calm when they were being bombed in WW2.
We all need to find our inner Brit and help our fellow Americans to be calm.
God is with us.
It is very difficult to keep the sheep calm when the media is whipping then into a panic every second of the day and night. President Trump tried, but.........
True.
Im so weary of them and their hateful, anti-American, anti-Trump shenanigans.
Exactly. She's a bureaucrat, and doesn't know how many ventilators exist. And nobody, even Tucker, knows how many we will need. And if we don't have enough, we can't just snap our fingers and make more of them materialize, as many as we need, no matter how many we need. Tucker is scared, but he's not helping.
No one expects the Spanish Inquisition.
We have to start being a little kinder to these people. I was just watching the press conference, its obvious these people are working impossible hours under incredible stress and they have to stand there and be badgered by some supposed jurnolist asking stupid and irrelevant questions.
We will get through this, we are Americans, thats what we do. I dont understand why people have to panic and make it harder on everyone. If they dont have the intestinal fortitude for a crisis then they should just shut up and let the rest of us just get through this. This is no time to be mean to those working themselves to death trying to keep us safe.
I think we could. That's why the Task Force's official's response is troubling.
It sounds like there is a stockpile and they've ordered more, a great first step. But a non-response with regard to numbers, doesn't tell us that they have a handle on the problem, and that they probably aren't ramping to the extent necessary.
I agree with you and disagree with Tucker, and I dont do that often.
He is pumping drama here, not a good thing
It is a known unknown.
Using your numbers:
5404 Dead + 5917 Serious = 11,321 Serious cases.
11,321/144,580 known cases = 7.83%.
But Iran isn’t reporting serious cases at all.
Iran has 57% as many cases as Italy. That implies another 865 serious cases.
Both the reporting out of China and Iran remains suspect.
aha, copyright violations. Okay that makes sense. Thanks. I’m glad I asked the question. So many helpful FReepers. You are number one!
Hi Danny, I’m not sure adding those was a valid assumption. I think we both have better things to do than convince each other. Stay well.
Fregards!
I agree with you that the numbers from China & Iran are not to be relied on when trying to get a handle on where we are. I will be very glad when China is replaced in our drug & consumable supply chain.
I’d rather pay more.
I was impressed how much the staff behind President Trump was nodding as he made his statements, different people were strongly in agreement with each statement. I had the feeling the entire team sees the situation, the needed steps and the progression of those steps to combat this viral invasion with one mind.
Trump is letting Federalism work.
Some dictator, eh?
