Say Your Prayers and Take Your Chances- Remembering the 1957 Asian Flu Pandemic
City Journal ^ | March 13, 2020 | Clark Whelton

...My first encounter with a global pandemic came in October 1957, when I spent a week in my college infirmary with a case of the H2N2 virus, known at the time by the politically incorrect name of “Asian flu.” My fever spiked to 105, and I was sicker than I’d ever been. The infirmary quickly filled with other cases, though some ailing students toughed it out in their dorm rooms with aspirin and orange juice. The college itself did not close, and the surrounding town did not impose restrictions on public gatherings. The day that I was discharged from the infirmary, I played in an intercollegiate soccer game, which drew a big crowd...

Sounds like this pandemic was worse than the one in the late 60's.

There were whole neighborhoods quarantined during that outbreak in ‘57

I’m 75 and in good health....but can’t get away from the fact that at 75....your lungs are simply not operating at full throttle.

The 1957 flu pandemic was second only to the Spanish Flu in terms of infection and CFR. The 68 flu pandemic was not as intense. There was a late 1970’s flu scare, called the Russian Flu which was thought to be a very similar strain of the Spanish flu.

The Wuhan virus panic is entirely dem/media-driven. The weaponization of an outbreak for political purposes.

Many many more people have been infected by other viral outbreaks. The common flu dwarfs this in sheer numbers of infections and deaths. Yet, the drumbeat of we’re all doomed because Trump continues unabated.

Today’s presser was a good example of this. The foreign press asked pointed questions politely and listened to the president’s answers. Our press was in full attack and accuse mode.

I had Asian flu when I was 3 years old, and my Mother had it at the same time. All I remember is that one of my aunts bought me a stuffed elephant. Lol. I don’t know if we were quarantined though.

I had Asian flu (China was the origin!). At age 11 after earlier childhood of rheumatic fever and being kept out of school in 1954 and not allowed any gym class or sports or play time, here I was sick in bed.

I distinctly listening to the small am radio by my bed and hearing over and over “beep, beep, beep” “That sound is from space where the Earth has a new second Moon, the Soviet Sputnik now circling the globe.”

Analysis was that the Soviets could now use space satellites to bomb and destroy the United States.

News stories also discussed the thousands of people dead rom the Asian flu from which I then suffered. Not comforting.

I was midway thru Basic at Ft. Gordon, GA when that came along. We took a little extra care when in the barracks at night for a week or two, and then all clear, as I recall.

I remember the Asian flu in 1957. I was boy at the time. Both my parents and my brother got the flue but I did not even though I was living in the same household. I’ve counted myself lucky ever since then.

Yes and No.

It’s a serious virus that can go through populations of susceptible people like a wildfire. By susceptible I mean elderly (especially in nursing facilities, homeless, folk that are immunocompromised.

When that happens the surge overwhelms the system and breakdown occurs. That’s what you are seeing in parts of northern Italy, Iran and Hubei province.

Is the media driving a panic? Hell yes. I’ve said it until I’m blue in the face that there has to be more responsible way of reporting this. Announcing every case and outcome is wearing people out. It’s insane.

I live in Kentucky. Our first COVID 19 patient was discharged from UK in good condition today, after being intubated a week ago. I have seen that story only sparingly on social media. However, if someone from Walla Walla Washington gets covid it’s plastered all over the media. I’ve said if they are going to cover the bad, they need to report the positive stories that give hope. People need good news to give hope. It’s not entirely unlike Doolittle raiding Tokyo after we were struggling in the opening days of the Pacific campaign.

That’s an amazing story. Simpler days for sure. I was born in 1971. Before the days of smart phones, Internet, and cable tv, radio was still a big thing. Spent countless nights in the late 70’s and early 80’s listening to the Cincinnati Reds. We were able to pick up a signal from WLW in Cincinnati. Good memories.

“”Sounds like this pandemic was worse than the one in the late 60’s.””

I don’t remember the 1957 one - had just moved from NY State to CA then but I sure remember the Hong Kong Flu in 1969...I don’t think I’ve ever had the flu since and I didn’t start flu shots until 2015 or so - first shot I’d ever had in my then 70+ years. Hubby has severe COPD, I have mild COPD and was convinced not to take any chances. He’s on 24/7 oxygen. He doesn’t leave the house except for doctor appointments and we got three of those out of the way this month and I don’t expect to take him out again - hopefully until this is all over. I have to shop for the same old stuff - milk/bread/eggs....No stocking up on those.

“”The one in 1968-69 was the Hong Kong flu. I got it. It wasn’t fun.””

Remember it well...was afraid we would die and afraid we wouldn’t. My husband and I stayed home from work for a week and crawled to the kitchen to get oranges out of the fridge...Never had the flu again..nor shots until about 2013 after diagnosis of COPD..Left the doctor’s office for a cough that wouldn’t go away, he wrote an order for a chest Xray, and on the way to the Outpatient to make the appointment made up my mind my last cigarette was the one I smoked on the way TO the doctor that morning. Never smoked another one.
