Say Your Prayers and Take Your Chances- Remembering the 1957 Asian Flu Pandemic
City Journal ^ | March 13, 2020 | Clark Whelton

...My first encounter with a global pandemic came in October 1957, when I spent a week in my college infirmary with a case of the H2N2 virus, known at the time by the politically incorrect name of “Asian flu.” My fever spiked to 105, and I was sicker than I’d ever been. The infirmary quickly filled with other cases, though some ailing students toughed it out in their dorm rooms with aspirin and orange juice. The college itself did not close, and the surrounding town did not impose restrictions on public gatherings. The day that I was discharged from the infirmary, I played in an intercollegiate soccer game, which drew a big crowd...

Try mine at 71; smoker since I was 11 years old, still am.

Just a good thing I live in an isolated area, 7 miles to town as the crow flies, a little over 12 miles on poorly maintained dirt road.

Only have to go into town (1200 people on a busy day) once a month to pick up the mail.

I remember that I got the flu sometime in the nineties. I told my husband to check on me every hour because i was afraid I would not make it and might need him to take me to hosp if I was out of it. He checked on me as planned. By morning I was better.

My Mom is elderly and has COPD, so I understand your need to be careful. One measure we're taking here is to wash our veggies in a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution when we bring them in from the store. 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide per sink full of water. At that rate a bottle of peroxide will sanitize the produce we buy for about one month.

NOTE: After the veggies are washed in this solution, we'll have them sit for about 10 minutes, and then rinse with cool water. I found our 4 bottles of hydrogen peroxide at the local dollar store.

I’m in the same boat as you age wise, plus the COPD, been a smoker my whole life (well, since I was 11 years old).

Make my own bread (200 pounds each of wheat oat and barley flour), chickens lay more eggs than I can use in any one month, dogs get the surplus. Just drink water and whiskey so I think I will just wait it out and see what happens.

I had Asian flu (China was the origin!)

FWIW the 16th Century Black Plague originated in China.

What is it about Chine and infectious diseases?

It’s the combination of raising hogs with ducks or geese. The influenza and associated viruses jump from the avian species to the swine and then to humans. China is the main country to raise livestock in this manner.

I had the Asian Flu in 1957, the Hong Kong Flu in 1968, the Swine Flu in 1976 and whatever was going around in 2017. In addition I had something in 1995 that went straight to my lungs and turned into pneumonia in about one day. Don’t know what they called it but it nearly killed me. It was the sickest I have been since the Red Measles when I was ten.

What’s different today is that Trump is being held to an impossibly high standard to prevent the spread of an infectious disease for political gain. The economic cost of trying to halt virus with a low death rate is enormous. The cure is worse than the disease. Geographical quarantines are next. Can you say escape from New York?

Merkel in Germany is taking a hands off approach and letting the virus run its course. She estimate 60% to 70% of Germans will get infected with a shrug.

I doubt we’ll see Walking Dead like carnage but panic could rapidly get out of control especially in dense urban areas.

Maybe it’s because they eat cats instead of letting them live and scare birds away and kills things like rats that have fleas?

The last time I was really sick was that thing in 1995. It was horrible! Luckily, I haven’t been sick since. However, now I’m classified as elderly. Also, I have never purchased hand sanitizer.

My mom caught it and had to miss our family trip to St. Louis to visit my aunt and uncle. Only time I ever saw my mom sick in 93 years.

We'd have to ask their pal Satan. Which I won't. Maybe ask a Dem to ask him.

Sanitation and a lot of people.

There also seems to be a connection in the virus evolutionary cycle in the comingling of pig and geese manure.

You’re so right. Including a great many Freeper Littles. The number of commenters on this board that have mimicked the dem/media talking points that we’re all going to die is so very disappointing.

“Yes and No.
It’s a serious virus that can go through populations of susceptible people like a wildfire. By susceptible I mean elderly (especially in nursing facilities, homeless, folk that are immunocompromised.
When that happens the surge overwhelms the system and breakdown occurs. That’s what you are seeing in parts of northern Italy, Iran and Hubei province.”

And exactly how is this different than any other Pandemic throughout history? Never mind the hyperbole. Look at the absolute numbers. Not the hyperventilating speculation.

The common flu the world experiences every single year DWARFS the infection rate and the death rate of this Wuhan virus.

This is a stone-cold fact. There are a great many previous pandemic outbreaks that DWARF this Wuhan virus. Again, a stone cold fact. So, given these facts why dem/media 24/7 hysteria? Politics my friend. Pure and simple.

This is seen by those people as a means to attack Trump. Everything else they’ve tried has failed so, they are giving this angle in an election year the Full Court Press. Another possible means to turn the people against the man and get rid of him.

Watch today’s presser and witness the American media’s bad attitude against Trump in comparison to the foreign media.

The foreign media asked pointed questions and then allowed Trump to answer their questions.

The American media were rude, disrespectful. In full attack and accuse mode.

Maybe I should stock up on whiskey..it would come in handy if we get colds.. Have some Bailey’s left over from New Years - I buy one bottle to bring in the New Year and we should finish that off. It’s in the fridge and in the way!

What on earth do you do with so much bread? You could start a “bread” kitchen - have your neighbor make the soup and you’re set.

Do you still smoke? My husband smoked from an early age also. I was aware of every cigarette I smoked but he wasn’t - not even aware he’d just put one out as he lit up another one. In the “old days” we could smoke at our desks but the cigarettes would burn down without being smoked and then we got to the PC “no smoking” in offices so had to go outside. We had our own business so my husband wasn’t under any restrictions as to when or where or how he could smoke!

Long ago days..
