I am not believing, necessarily, the root of the hype. It is a nasty virus, but we have survived nasty viruses before without losing our collective minds.
The reality of the situation is that people are panicking. It doesn’t matter at this point whether or not the panic is well founded. Panic is a monster of it’s own.
We are now stuck with dealing with the fruits of the panic - shortages, closures, lack of transportation, etc.
Personally, I am more concerned with the effects of the “cure” than I am the disease itself.

In northern Virginia, the warehouse stores like. BJs and Costco are like mob scenes. Lines of people grabbing water, TP and anything resembling food. Regular markets are running short of canned soups and non-perishable dry goods.
We can’t move out of here fast enough.
