Thanks for that link. I grew up with the 1967 Tiny Tim version and always hated the song. I had no idea it was written in 1929 and performed like that by the California Ramblers (who I also never heard of). Fun music!

Ah, May The Red Rose Live Always by Stephen Foster, 1850.
I like Suzie Bogguss' performance on "Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster" which won the Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album in 2005. Such wonderful evocative lyrics!
Ah! may the red rose live alway,
To smile upon earth and sky!
Why should the beautiful ever weep?
Why should the beautiful die?
Lending a charm to ev'ry ray
That falls on her cheeks of light,
Giving the zephyr kiss for kiss,
And nursing the dewdrop bright --
Ah! may the red rose live alway,
To smile upon earth and sky!
Why should the beautiful ever weep?
Why should the beautiful die?
