Disneyland, California Adventure to close starting Saturday because of coronavirus concerns

Disney on Thursday announced it will be closing Disneyland and California Adventure Park from Saturday through the end of the month as cases of the novel coronavirus continue to rise in Southern California and nationwide.

---SNIP---

The move was made shortly after Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order calling for the cancelation of large, non-essential public gatherings in California, though he exempted theme parks and casinos from the directive.

"After carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California's executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure," a statement from the theme park read. The company emphasized there have been no cases of COVID-19 linked to the resort.

---SNIP---

Both Anaheim theme parks will be closed starting Saturday morning and will remain shut down through the end of the month, according to the statement.

Disneyland Resort hotels will stay open until Monday to accommodate guests who need to make other arrangements.

---SNIP---

The resort assured guests it will work with them to change or cancel their visits, and it will also provide refunds to anyone who had a hotel booking while the theme parks are closed. It was not immediately known whether any type of compensation would extend to annual passport holders.

Employees will be paid during the closure.

---SNIP---

Other Disney parks, including in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo, were also temporarily closed in response to coronavirus.

Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland Paris remained open as of Thursday.

Apparently the belief is if we shut down our lives for a few weeks, the virus will disappear.

Wonder what damage this will do to the economy when it’s May and June and the virus is still spreading. Do we keep everything closed down until we get a vaccine?

Viruses subside in the summertime, and don’t talk about chicken coops like Manila.

There is no assurances of that. No one knows what it will do.

Influenza goes away in the summer. That doesn’t mean this virus will.

“Kids, I have some sad news for you.”

“What is it, daddy?”

“We won’t be seeing Goofy and Dopey.”

“They cancelled the Democrat debate?”

Apparently the belief is if we shut down our lives for a few weeks, the virus will disappear.-

Not “shut down our lives”, just keep separation to slow down the spread. Not “virus will disappear”, but rather simply slow down the spread to make sure the health care system doesn’t collapse.

I think we’re in for a “no group event” environment for 2 months, and if we can maintain that, we will come out of those 2 months a lot better off.

DuckDuckGo “flattening the curve”.

And we won’t have an economy left. Considering most of this country lives paycheck to paycheck....the summer will be ugly no matter what.

They are truly terrified of a President Trump 2nd term.

Going to happen no matter what. They may as well do their worst because we're going to do ours.

Not everything is about politics. Look at northern Italy - is that about politics?

Maybe. Maybe we cut down on mass gatherings for a month, but do different things instead. It will be an economic challenge, but that we can more easily Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome than a healthcare system collapse. (See: Northern Italy. )

Ohio health officials think 100,000 people are already infected.

We can’t contain this virus. We are past that.

I believe the belief is that if we shut down our lives for a few weeks, the growth of the virus will slow (it may take two weeks to see the slowing) which will give hospitals a chance to deal with the very ill without being overwhelmed. Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan are doing a better job of dealing with this than say Italy or Iran.

We certainly can control the RATE of its spread.

We certainly can do whatever we can to keep the healthcare system from being overwhelmed.

I think the realization of what you stated - the fact we probably have a lot of cases already - combined with the risk of overwhelming the hospitals - it what's led to the big time large-gathering shutdown and travel bans of this week.

SO... let's do these things, find other ways to conduct business, do what we can to keep everything from collapsing...
...and we'll come out the other side better than if we didn't.

You can only blame Dutae for the Philippines mess. He refused to stop Communist Chinese flights, while Provincial Governors and Mayors wanted to. He did not want to offend the Communist Chinese. In fact, for a week he complained that Filipinos were racist and xenophobic for wanting to ban the Communist Chinese

Optimistic with caution. The best way.
