Italy Locks Down Entire Country Over Coronavirus Outbreak
Daily Wire ^

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on Monday that the government has locked down the entire country in an attempt to deal with the outbreak of the coronavirus, which originated in China.

“Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the measures, which come into effect on Tuesday, were necessary to defend the most fragile members of the community,” the BBC reported. “He added that the best thing for the citizens of Italy was to stay at home. Italy’s coronavirus death toll jumped on Monday by 97 to 463. It is the worst-hit country after China.”

Lot of Chinese came back there after Chinese New Year celebrations.

They came back in time for the Milan Fashion Week.

why Italy is so special in terms of outbreak

Italy isn't special, it just got started a little earlier there. Feb 27, under two weeks ago they only had 655 cases, now they are at 9,172. It's what exponential growth looks like.

Today the US has 624 cases. So in two weeks, we might expect nine thousand. But nothing is set in stone, epidemics are not fate. We can slow it down. We need more action, more people taking it seriously, and much much less "it's just the flu bro."

Their median age is 8 years older than ours in the US. 46.5 vs 38.5. 2018 estimates.

Can someone post a link to up to date statistics for Italy? Most interested in number of cases/number of deaths by age group.

“Do you shut down an ENTIRE COUNTRY for the benefit of essentially a small percentage of the population?”

In the USA, I wouldn’t mind a similar kind of shutdown. They’re only canceling nonsense like sporting events and other similar stuff. The generation that fought in Vietnam is of the age where this virus can cause serious problems. Those guys were screwed by this country so many times that I’ve lost count. At least give them a little bit of breathing space when it comes to this virus.

Garment workers in the fashion industry in Milan are predominantly Chinese and many went home for the holidays & returned. There is a lot of cross pollination with Chinese buyer being a big presence at the fashion shows. A number of participating designers are Chinese as well.

It’s doubling every six days.

Daily Mail has a story on a physician assistant at a medical conference near Times Square who tested positive. That one guy was in contact with thousands of people and people who are in constant contact with patients.

The Missouri case had a daughter who traveled cross country on Amtrak.

The preppers apparently got it right. Time to get ready. Big cities will be the worst place to be.

I don’t see NYC in polite lockdown like Wuhan. I foresee riots and looting in major cities. Many will see this as an opportunity of a lifetime to cash in. Purge 2020.

Sure..because we’ve completely hermetically sealed off every US state with 100 foot walls, moats filled with fire breathing dragons, and some serious drawbridges.

OF COURSE it is coming here in the exact same way.

Trump’s former FDA Commissioner said earlier today “we have lost containment”.

There is no putting the genie back in the bottle at this point. This thing is here and spreading rapidly.

And before anyone gets too happy there are “only” < 1K “confirmed” cases in the US, consider this..we have only tested < 2,000 people - nationwide - to this point.

It’s likely we’re at 10K+ cases..and doubling every 4-6 days per most estimates.

Fairly soon, we are going to look just like Italy. We’re only a couple of weeks behind them on the growth curve.

All this fuss over a flag Flu!
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Why drawbridges?

You want to come in? Do it the traditional way, by trebuchet like at Caffa!

of course with your self proclaimed history of gambling you’d be the one to bring up the topic of making money on other people’s misery...

I sure hope we have enough Parma Ham, Parma Reggiano Cheese and Pignolia Nuts, to survive until this thing plays itself out.

In case you missed it..quite a few people here believe that the virus is no big deal.

So they should volunteer. They can make quite a bit of money as they CLEARLY feel this virus is nothing.

Hey, I am betting against my Bucks tonight without Giannis. Nuggets plus 4.5 parlayed.

Oh and Buffalo

ITS AMAZING THE ITALIANS CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHY THE VIRUS HAS HIT ITALY SO HARD. MAYBE THE MILLIONS OF IMMIGRANTS ALLOWED INTO THEIR COUNTRY WITH OUT A CLUE WHO THEY WERE OR WHERE THEY IMMMIGRATED FROM AND WHAT DISEASES THEY CARRIED.
