Roundup of Saudi Royals Expands With Detention of a 4th Prince
nytimes ^ | 3/7/2020 | By David D. Kirkpatrick, Ben Hubbard

The arrests have raised questions about whether the crown prince was on the verge of taking full power from his father, King Salman.

The scope of a new roundup of Saudi royals widened on Saturday with word that a fourth senior prince has been detained under orders from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to two Saudis close to the royal family, in a sign that he is determined to crack down on even whispers of dissent.

The wave of arrests has ensnared a former head of army intelligence, Prince Nayef bin Ahmed, as well as at least three other senior princes, all detained on Friday. The full extent of the roundup is still not clear.

Crown Prince Mohammed, 34, has already consolidated his power as the de facto ruler of the kingdom in the name of his aging father, King Salman, 84. But the arrests offered new evidence of how far the crown prince would go to lock down potential opponents within his family, stirring new fear within its ranks, according to several people close to the family.

The most senior family member detained was Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, the father of Prince Nayef and the last surviving full brother of King Salman. The arrests of both father and son stunned the royal family because Prince Ahmed’s closeness to the king had so far appeared to provide him a measure of immunity against the wrath of the crown prince, even when he came down on others. The detentions also raised questions about whether the crown prince might have feared a plot against him within the family, or that he might be seeking to shut down potential opponents as he prepares to take full power from the aging king.

Do we know if the Crown Prince leans toward crazy jihadist Wahhabism? Or might he lean toward the “Let’s stop being insane” concept?

The prince to me shows a tendency to be a Muslim heretic and a desire to collaborate with us infidels, therefore he should be targeted by the Wahhabis close to him. - Tom

All reports say the prince is trying to drain his own swamp of radical Wahabbists.

Yup. As long as that's the case, I really don't care what he does to his family.

He seems to be more on the side of "why are we in bed with these nuts?"

Not that I trust any mohammedan but he might be a tad bit more balanced then most.

Please note the "might".

There is a continuous history of 1398 years of muslim jihad from when Mad Mo launched his war against the rest of humanity in 622 A.D.

Muslims cannot be peaceful, it’s against their religion.

...Crown Prince Mohammed, 34, has already consolidated his power as the de facto ruler of the kingdom in the name of his aging father, King Salman, 84...

Right in that sentence above I detect a serious problem.

Saudi royals are sexually profligate, 4 wives at any given time, but there is a constant stream of new ones so there can be hundreds over the course of one man's life. AND birth control is illegal in the country, so there are many, many children.

Yet Crown Prince Mohammed is 34 while his father is 84. What happened to the older children his father must have had? Those from the ages between 18 and 50?

Somehow I am smelling a rat in here.

Birth Control is not illegal in SA and Salman has had only three wives, (died, divorced, current) MBS is the eldest of the sons by the current wife. Not sure if that has anything to do with his being the heir or not. He has six older half brothers, one older half sister and five younger brothers.

And I now know more about the house of Saud then I really wanted to.

I agree 100%. I don't give two hoots for any of those 7th. century barbarians and their sectarian blood feuds. The Saudis, the Kurds, the Syrians, the Iranians, the Iraqis, any of them. Tired of seeing our men and women dying, being physically scared and psychologically broken fighting endless wars in Mid East crap holes. Let them all kill each other. They have a positive talent for it and little for anything else.

Now we will find out how many (pieces of) Saudi princes it takes to fill a suitcase. The “journalist” required three suitcases, but he was pretty fat.

If the Crown Prince is “trying to drain his own swamp”, it is logical, as Mr. Spock would say, to use “ROUNDUP”. It works very well on weeds despoiling the earth.

King Fahd had his three most powerful sons at the head of the National Guard, MODA (Ministry of Defense and Aviation), and the State Police to keep any one of them from becoming too powerful to take over.
