"This Is The Most Frightening Disease I've Ever Encountered In My Career" Says Architect Of National Pandemic Strategy

An infectious diseases expert at the forefront of the search for a coronavirus vaccine said on Friday that it was the most “frightening disease“ he’s ever encountered, and that “war is an appropriate analogy” for what the country is facing, as “50 – 70 percent of the global population” may become infected.

Hatchett, who sat on the White House Homeland Security Council in 2005 – 2006 and was a principal author of the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza Implementation Plan, and currently heads the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, told the UK’s Channel 4:

“This is the most frightening disease I’ve ever encountered in my career, and that includes Ebola, it includes MERS, it includes SARS. And it’s frightening because of the combination of infectiousness and a lethality that appears to be manyfold higher than flu.”

He feels this way “because of the combination of infectiousness, and a lethality that appears to be many-fold higher than the flu.“

When asked what concerns him the most about coronavirus, Hatchett said:

“I think the most concerning thing about this virus is the combination of infectiousness and the ability to cause severe disease or death. And we have not since 1918, the Spanish Flu, seen a virus that combined those two qualities in the same way. We have seen very lethal viruses. We have seen certainly, Ebola, or Nipah, or any of the other diseases that CEPI, the organisation that I run, works on – but those viruses had high mortality rates – I mean, Ebola’s mortality rate in some settings is greater than 80%. But they don’t have the infectiousness that this does. They don’t have the potential to explode and spread globally.“

Hatchett added “I don’t think it is a crazy analogy to compare this to World War II.

Yep - some folks aren’t truly happy unless they have something to worry about - they ignore stories like the guy Fox interviewed yesterday - he and his wife looked to be in their late 40s to early 50s and his wife was diagnosed first...he was initially tested as negative and the testing on him was because he was a kidney transplant recipient and therefore at higher risk if sick. His wife had a fever for 4-5 hours and is now asymptomatic and he was later diagnosed positive (retested after wife showed positive) and has had zero symptoms.
It’s likely the majority of cases will be mild enough to be asymptomatic or low symptoms - makes it harder to contain but normal cold/Flu precautions are the best bet - if folks can stop panicking long enough to actually practice them.

The constant hammering (yammering) is one of the reasons that Rahm’s old comment about never letting a crisis go to waste has any value as a strategy.

Many on FR are carrying the Dem’s water for them as The Great Dem Hope Virus goes through its progression.

Stay well, my FRiend.

“Did you ever read the story by the guy who had an anal fissure named Bob? I laughed nonstop. I had one once. Mild but awful.”

Never read Bob’s story but I know Bonemaker’s story!! 6 months of horror finally ended by botox injection (at least not a lateral sphincterectomy).

I have read extensively about the 1918 flu. Years ago now but it was a great entry for me into the subject of virology. Even spent a couple of years reading microfilmed newspapers from the time.

Anyway I think I understand what he is saying.
The basic principle is that the easier it is to get, the less lethal it is. The more lethal it is the harder to spread, cause it kills the host.

The virology is the clue to the epidemiology. The author has seen the characteristics of the germ and has concluded reasonably. This one is as infectious as the common cold or flu. Yes it is, just like those four coronaviruses. It is deadlier than the flu. Yes because it has a unique pathway into the cell.

How deadly!?!? We’ll see I guess.
The NEJM says a CFR of under 1%. Their data matches the peculiar structure of the germ. That is worse than the seasonal flu, not as bad as the Spanish flu.

Huge difference is that Spanish Flu killed the young in large numbers. That is not happening now for a reason. No outbreaks in schools even in Wuhan! Please correct me if anyone has new info. Kids are testing positive but are asymptomatic.

Gotta Go!

Yes, but we are taking measures that were not taken in 1918; and, we have instant world-wide communications. Now, if we just had some leadership at all levels.

I'm with you, Trump Girl.  Perspective from the CDC's website on how the influenza risk is highest among the elderly: Here's are CDC's instructions on protecting we "older folk" from Covad-19.

Maybe in his life span. BUBONIC OR BLACK PLAGUE 40-60 MILLION. Only cleanilines and quarantine helped kill it off, it is not completely dead, just isolated.

In his lifetime common FLU. 4TH YR IN A ROW CDC SCREWS UP VACCINE. Less people including medical know the signs of dehydration which kills young and old, sick faster.

One in ten requiring intensive care in Italy.

One in ten of the reported cases that tested positive. Most people won't even bother going to the doctor for this.

Some people on-line appear to be agitated that everyone isn’t as concerned about this as they are.

Yup. This is the first time I've seen the "We are all going to die" contingent angry that not everyone believes them.

They don’t bother going to the doctor but go about their life spreading it to those more vulnerable...

So 90% of those infected are treated and released like the flu....

And thats just the cases that are to a level they require health care...

More we learn about this virus, the more we are finding most cases are mild....

Let’s go with your theory. Most are mild.

I agree with that. Problem is that means those people go out and spread it.

My theory is that Northern Italy is similar to Europe is similar to the U.S. Therefore, let’s look at their experience to judge what would happen here and very possibly will be happening here.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/coronavirus-italy-doctors-intensive-care-deaths-a9384356.html

Are these doctors all lying or exaggerating things? Is that your position? Do you feel that’s a logical position?

The power of denial is very strong. At some point, let’s look at facts and experience and form reasonable positions for discussions.

I am not denying anything, I am pointing out factual reality... the spread and death rate of the disease is slowing...that’s a fact, it went from doubling every 2 days worldwide to doubling every 3 days worldwide... that’s a significant slowdown.

Secondly with any disease there are hot spots, that doesn’t mean the hot spot is a representative sample for the whole.

To date there have been less than 4,000 deaths worldwide credited to this disease, and 1, a whole 1 death of a child credited to it. To put it in perspective there have been over 20,000 deaths in the US alone from the Flu this season and I believe 136 of them were children.

This “its the end of days” is nonsense.... Its fear mongering and its silly.

In the US, there have been 22 total deaths, and 19 of them were in 1 state, and nursing home patients... This is not and “END TIMES” scenario... its STUPID and SILLY to do that.

Infection rates are SLOWING world wide, not increasing.. if it is as bad as the fear mongers wanted you to believe this would not be the case. THe mortality rate of this thing isn’t ANYWHERE near the fear mongering that is going on... Folks need to stop.... they need to stop and calm down.

If infection rates were so horrible (let alone death rates) there would not be anyone on these cuise ships without having the virus, yet even in situations where they know the virus is on the ship, the actual confirmed cases are low, and thats in an close inescapable environment... If this was an end days type of disease, these cruise ships would be nothing but floating morgues....

Stop, just stop.

I would think EBOLA is FAR WORSE......but that’s just me.

Ebola symptoms are far worse. But Ebola doesn't spread as easy, and carriers aren't contagious until they start getting those terrible symptoms, so containment is relatively easy (for a 1st/2nd-world country).

But this guy, while the symptoms aren't as bad in most cases, spreads much easier, and also people with no symptoms are contagious. So it's near impossible to contain. 5% dead out of everybody is a LOT more people than 90% dead out of a couple thousand.
