It seems so long ago that the first openly gay candidate won the Iowa caucuses. Mere weeks later, the Pete Buttigieg campaign is now past tense, as the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Wherever that leaves Buttigieg and his future political prospects — or any future LGBTQ candidate — this moment affords us an opportunity to ask ourselves where the nation as a whole really is in terms of acceptance of LGBTQ candidates.
To be clear, I’m not arguing that Buttigieg was unsuccessful only because of homophobia. But lessons from this cycle do allow us to be honest about the challenges that LGBTQ candidates face. While these issues may not have gotten a lot of attention in 2020, Buttigieg’s campaign demonstrates how many problems of homophobia still remain.

There was/is nothing about this young mayor of a small town that qualifies him to run for the office of President of the United States.
His progressive, radical, liberal ideas are abhorrent. (Ditto the rest of the candidates on the left.)
It is not homophobic to disagree with his life style. Most of us here would agree there should be equality in law and life. However, 4% of our population ought not to dictate to the rest of us in every forum. We do not have to celebrate or elevate, and they can’t make us.

Seeing him kissing his husband on the lips is downright nauseating. Completely unacceptable.
“Homophobia” is a Frankenword. Slang plus phobia.
But if its Greek roots (homos, phobos) are read literally, then `homophobia’ means “fear of the same” as in “fear of those who share the same qualities as oneself”.
Me, I’m not afraid of other heterosexual gun owners who support Trump, so I guess I’m not a homophobe.

In my mind there is no such thing as, “homophobia.”
I simply do not know enough Latin to express, “Completely disgusted by homosexuality and the things which homosexuals do to each other.”
Homophobia is a made up word. Nobody likes a queer except other queers. I am not afraid of them, but rather am disgusted by their behavior. Normal people should never have allowed them out of the closet.
