It seems so long ago that the first openly gay candidate won the Iowa caucuses. Mere weeks later, the Pete Buttigieg campaign is now past tense, as the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Wherever that leaves Buttigieg and his future political prospects or any future LGBTQ candidate this moment affords us an opportunity to ask ourselves where the nation as a whole really is in terms of acceptance of LGBTQ candidates.
To be clear, Im not arguing that Buttigieg was unsuccessful only because of homophobia. But lessons from this cycle do allow us to be honest about the challenges that LGBTQ candidates face. While these issues may not have gotten a lot of attention in 2020, Buttigiegs campaign demonstrates how many problems of homophobia still remain.

If it weren’t for the gay angle, CIA Mayor Pete never would have been on the stage or got the majority of the donations and votes he got.
Well duh. New meaning to “CINC”. Colluder In Chief”
Such hateful Democrats.
It’s not a phobia to disagree with someone about the chosen life style.
Maybe the fact that he’s the Mayor of a small city in a middling sized state.
And add that he’s an empty suit literally reciting things that Obama said.
I think he in fact only got as much traction as he did because he was openly a sodomite.
Progressives liked the idea of the “first gay president.”
No BootyJudge was the CIA’s candidate, which is just as bad a being a poofter.
“Its not a phobia to disagree with someone about the chosen life style.”
I agree , thanks for stating it so well.
Correct.
He was strictly the “prove you are progreasive” candidate.
I am a very awful person to say this but am I the only one who has a problem with a “fairy princess” as first lady?
“If it werent for the gay angle, CIA Mayor Pete never would have been on the stage or got the majority of the donations and votes he got.”
Yes. And a few deep pockets.
And don’t forget the Hollywood support.
Homophobia had nothing to do with Buttgig losing. As you say - his being a queer actually got him a lot further than he deserved.
more accurately described as homo-nausea
Gee...what a bad country we are. Oh the Humanity!!! [/s]
What hurt him was his policies and track record. At least for me.
We don’t fear Buttgiggity, we just don’t like him or his politics.
I ask “ How can someone who’s lifestyle represents less then 3.9% of the population expect to represent the other 96%”
How can his thought patterns be expected to represent the majority when it wavers so far from the majority he wishes to represent?
I miss typing ButtGiggle already....
Silly. If anything it helped him. He looks 16 and like Alfred E Newman and being homosexual is a big intersectionality plus. It helps make up for being white and male.
This is just his PR people setting the narrative for 2024.
