Desperate to avoid coming down with a winter cold or worse, plenty of us will be dosing up on vitamin C supplements and doctors in China are even looking into its effectiveness against coronavirus.
Research into new and exciting uses such as battling sepsis and memory loss is also under way.
We spend more than £880 million on vitamin C supplements globally, with that figure expected to top £1.1 billion by 2024.
Its popularity is rooted in the belief that vitamin C can prevent colds a theory first set out in 1970 by Nobel Prize-winning scientist Linus Pauling. He was convinced of its benefits and personally took 3g a day, although much of his research on the vitamin was later discredited.
Certainly, when it comes to infections or a virus such as flu, it is accepted that vitamin C is part of the immune response and quickly becomes depleted. It helps by encouraging the production of white blood cells that fight disease, attaching themselves to, and killing, invading microbes.
However, multiple studies have failed to back up Paulings theory of vitamin C as a preventative supplement and, according to a 2017 report by the authoritative review board the Cochrane Collaboration, the best we can hope from taking a well above average daily 1,000mg of vitamin C is shortening the length of a cold by 8 per cent about 0.4 days.
Higher doses than this have been found to shorten colds further research from the University of Helsinki in 2017 found that daily doses of 6g to 8g could shorten symptoms of a cold by 19 per cent. But in the general population, vitamin C was not found to have any preventative effect.

OJ, unless freshly squeezed, has too much sugar in it.
Thanks for posting. Yeah, I heard massive doses intravenously can do many wonderful things. I dunno. I’m not a doc and didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn last night.
HEALTH/LIFE BUMP! Take care. It goes by fast.
Just don’t take it all at once by mouth. The digestive system can’t process too much at one time.
Single super large doses (~5,000 mg or so) need to be taken IV, I believe. ‘Miracle’ cures of terminal sepsis have been reported anecdotally after super- or mega- doses of Vit. C taken intravenously
Yup. I mention that in post 7.
From what I’ve read D is for prevention 10,000 units/day and 15,000 if you start to get symptomatic.
C is to treat the symptoms. Liposomal seems to be the way to go.
Did D the last 3 winters and dodge all the office’s bugs.
Yes, I know there are health care professionals hear that poo poo the idea of Vitamin C helping with sepsis.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Not this doctor/hospital. Also, the vitamin C HAS to be used in conjunction with steroids - two separate biological tests proved that vitamin C and steroids were effective against sepsis but only when used together.
BTW, Vitamin C, antibiotics, antidepressants, birth control pills, blood pressure medicines, cancer drugs, among many others are made in China and sold in the United States. Book: China Rx by Rosemary Gibson.

Why would fresh squeezed have less that 100% orange juice. BY law nothing is added.
Vitamin C is good..so is Tumeric..just dont take too much Vitamin C it can mess up the liver..actually taking too much of anything can mess up the liver
I take Vitamin D everyday since I am a little deficient in it..before I would take the 50,000 ever few weeks but since I would forget to take it now I take a smaller dose everyday(Or every other day)
I eat a cabbage salad almost every day + take a higher dose of Vitamin C. Did not stave off the thing I had last week, but the THING was not respiratory.
Sat outside yesterday and today and soaked up some Vitamin D.
That is the Doctor that others dispute.
Studies still ongoing in various countries.
Check out zinc and Vitamin C. Good immune system is good for you.
I looked up the point of cabbage salad. See it has vitamin C and K...K is what you need for Vitamin D. Not sure if it is the right part of Vitamin K
also helps flush liver.
Megadoses of intravenous vitamin C is the ideal - the referenced study in the linked article was from JAMA last October. Its title was “Effect of Vitamin C Infusion on Organ Failure and Biomarkers of Inflammation and Vascular Injury in Patients With Sepsis and Severe Acute Respiratory Failure: The CITRIS-ALI Randomized Clinical Trial” (JAMA [JAMA] 2019 Oct 01; Vol. 322 (13), pp. 1261-1270.). DOI: 10.1001/jama.2019.11825.
The double-blind study’s scope was limited and wasn’t intended to examine the mortality differences. But what it showed is enough to warrant serious notice. It’s unfortunate it was a one-time treatment of 96 hours and wasn’t continued for several weeks.
I urge everyone to watch the YouTube video of the lead researcher: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3_aYNT1KNA
This is a BIG deal. Given that COVID-19 kills by ARDS, anything that combats ARDS, especially in the early stages should be encouraged. and megadoses of intravenous Vitamin C does precisely that.
I’ve just reordered acerola cherry power (one of the best sources of natural vitamin C) from Nuts.com (5-lb bag) - I blame my month-long flu earlier this year on not using this product after I ran out a while back. While oral vitamin C is nowhere near comparable to intravenous, I’m hoping I can saturate my blood to such an extent that COVID-19 won’t debilitate or kill me if I become infected.
I take Zinc and Zicam (dont care if people say it is scam) when I get sick.
I’ll just plug it in with my daily 8-ball!
I’ve been looking into this.
These days, as corrupt as a lot of “science” is, I judge more by clinical experience. If he’s had sepsis patients walking out the door after his treatment, that’s good enough for me. I know several folks that have died of sepsis .... nothing to lose giving them Vit C/steroids & if it were my parents, that is what I would be telling the docs. Of course, the big bugaboo with this treatment is that Big Pharma can’t make big bucks off of it.
Me too. Drs say vitamins dont help. Me I figure they cant hurt. 68 yrs and still smiling.
