How does the coronavirus attack the human body? Scientists reveal the deadly illness kills off lung cells and can cause the immune system to go 'haywire'

The coronavirus could damage people's kidneys and send their immune systems 'haywire' as well as infecting the lungs, according to scientists.

More than 90,000 people have now been infected with the disease, which is known to cause serious lung damage and deadly pneumonia.

It does this by attaching to and reproducing in tissue inside the lungs, where it kills cells in the process of spreading.

As the cells are killed they drop off the lungs' linings and build up in clumps inside the organs, making it hard to breathe and triggering further infections.

The virus can also send the immune system into overdrive as it tries to fight off infection, triggering swelling which can lead to more breathing difficulties.

If a severe infection takes hold it may move on to cause damage or dysfunction to the stomach, intestines, heart, liver and kidneys, and even provoke organ failure.

Around 90,000 people around the world have been infected with the coronavirus since the beginning of January, and more than 3,000 patients have died.

It comes as scientists today warned the coronavirus could become an infection that never goes away and causes seasonal outbreaks of illness, like flu.

I realise many of you dont care. You can move along to a thread you do care about.

So the idea that if you have a runny nose you don't have Wuhan appears to be false.

This describes in a broad way what happened to my young healthy family member many years ago. However, in that case the death was swift. Less than 4 days.

Calming the cytokine storm seems to be essential. Those that believe in Sambucol should review articles on the subject and make an educated decision. I did see a lot of people buying it at Costco.

And most people are recovering from COVID-19.

fluid in lungs... So while I suppose this can happen rather fast, but wouldn’t an expectorant help with this?

For the 1st time in so many years I can’t even remember, I have not yet been put in bed for a week or 2 at a time or gone to the hospital because I couldn’t breathe you paragraph I do note however, that I did take the flu shot back in October

Despite the flu shot, I did get a little sick in January

I’m in silicon Valley

How do I know I did not have the Wuhan virus?

Obviously, I’m still alive

FYI, pretty much all respiratory viruses (those aspirated) invade lung cells, grow, and go through what’s called the lysis phase - the splitting phase - where they split open the invaded cells and the ‘babies’ (not really) look for new host cells. The lysis phases is when your fever spikes, you are at the increased risk for pneumonia (fluid in the lungs) and respiratory distress. This is also when your immune system goes all OMG, you have a histamine reaction and your nose runs, your phlegm volume increase, life sucks, you get the idea.

BTW, with a viral infection your fever goes up and down whereas with a bacterial infection it just trends up to a max.

This article is accurate, but it’s also arguably accurate for any and all respiratory viral infections.

Your illness will vary .

Because of you I was terrified during the night!!

I had a minor respiratory infection and after you told me pneumonia leaves scars on the lung, my eyes were wide open for hours!

I’ve had pneumonia twice.

But thankfully I woke up and the infection was gone :)

All joking aside (OK i WAS a LITTLE concerned), I bet there are MANY, MANY people who had the coronavirus and got better at home and will never know they had it.

The percentage of mild conditions is quite a decent number, WHO says, and we will never know.

Unless they pass it on to someone who ends up dying...

I can’t read the article because I have an ad blocked, but exactly who are these scientists making these claims? There are scientists, and then there are activists, which is why I ask.

And most people are recovering from COVID-19.

Yeah, all the governments on earth instituting quarantines, banning travel, closing schools and business and blockading entire cities are a bunch of ignorant fools.

All of the spies from every country. All of the health officials. All of the doctors. In all countries including the United States are just a bunch of rubes being tricked by the left here in America.

Can't believe they're all falling for this massive worldwide hoax. Can't believe EVERY government in the world, including the United States, is on in this. Idiots.

The woman from Israel on the Cruise ship did not feel all that ill but she had it. I do not remember if she even had a fever.

I suspect many have had it here and just thought it was regular flu.

More and more you seem to be a fear monger. I begin to wonder how much you have invested on a market crash. You all but guaranteed one today.

That, and NOT lying in bed - where you die from pneumonia/ respiratory failure due to these collected, un-expectorated fluids preventing oxygen in/ CO2 out.

FYI smokers, even ex-smokers have a tougher time because nicotine killed their ciliated epithelium which really help sweet out your lungs.

Interesting information. From a diagnostic viewpoint it would be hard to decipher when you need the CDC test and when you don’t just based on symptoms alone.

Oh brother...what a ridiculous statement. If you read my posts I said I was flat over the weekend. Still no position.

I am not a fear mongerer. I do have experience with DEATH from the flu and caution people to be aware it can happen in the blink of an eye to those you wouldn’t expect...and to take proper cautions.

Yup. What you present with/for = respiratory infection. what you are infected WITH generally requires a test. Bad news is, you were likely contagious BEFORE you felt bad enough to visit a doc in the box.

Look, if you’re over 70 or have a weakened pulmonary system from too much air pollution and/or too much smoking, you’re at high risk from COVID-19.

No no no...scars on the lungs thing wouldn’t come from me. Might be an article or blurb I posted.

I don’t know if it does.

I have wondered about the glass shard look on Xrays and wondered if it shows up after you recover from Wuhan

Reminds of the movie The Andromeda Strain. While a small town is wiped out by some mysterious space virus a baby and an old guy survive and the investigation team try to find the common link.
