Two cases detected weeks apart in Washington State had genetic links, suggesting that many more people in the area may be infected.
Researchers who have examined the genomes of two coronavirus infections in Washington State say the similarities between the cases suggest that the virus may have been spreading in the state for weeks.
Washington had the United States first confirmed case of coronavirus, announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Jan. 20. Based on an analysis of the viruss genetic sequence, another case that surfaced in the state and was announced on Friday probably was descended from that first case.
The two people live in the same county, but are not known to have had contact with one another, and the second case occurred well after the first would no longer be expected to be contagious. So the genetic findings suggest that the virus has been spreading through other people in the community for close to six weeks, according to one of the scientists who compared the sequences, Trevor Bedford, an associate professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington.
Dr. Bedford said it was possible that the two cases could be unrelated, and had been introduced separately into the United States. But he said that was unlikely, however, because in both cases the virus contained a genetic variation that appears to be rare it was found in only two of the 59 samples whose sequences have been shared from China, where the virus originated. A scientist who was not involved in the analysis said he agreed with the conclusion that the second case was connected to the original Washington case. I think hes right, said Andrew Rambaut, professor of molecular evolution at the University of Edinburgh, referring to Dr.

And there was no panic....cuz the press didn’t know. LOL
I had the worst virus I’ve ever had in my life starting on Black Friday and lasting for six weeks. I am now wondering if this could perhaps be what I had.
I haven’t been out of the country in 25 years so no idea how if that’s the case.
My granddaughter had it at Christmas. Her mom and dad got it after that. I stayed home last Christmas since I was scheduled for cataract surgery.
There is a Doctor here who is absolutely convinced that it could have never been here in December. This was back when the first case showed up.
It boggled my mind that a Dr would not understand that CHina could be lying about when this started..and with air travel it could have been here in December and we just didn’t know it.
The absolute certainty of this Dr sort of scares me. THis means that Dr would not listen to a patient that thinks they might have had it back in December or even before the first official case.
I know several people that had a similar episode in that time frame. I was wondering the same thing.
I’ve felt great all along.
I’m concerned I may have an asymptomatic case.
Not insignificant if you're the grandma. I'm 76 years old and I'm not ready to 'roll over'.
