Two cases detected weeks apart in Washington State had genetic links, suggesting that many more people in the area may be infected.
Researchers who have examined the genomes of two coronavirus infections in Washington State say the similarities between the cases suggest that the virus may have been spreading in the state for weeks.
Washington had the United States first confirmed case of coronavirus, announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Jan. 20. Based on an analysis of the viruss genetic sequence, another case that surfaced in the state and was announced on Friday probably was descended from that first case.
The two people live in the same county, but are not known to have had contact with one another, and the second case occurred well after the first would no longer be expected to be contagious. So the genetic findings suggest that the virus has been spreading through other people in the community for close to six weeks, according to one of the scientists who compared the sequences, Trevor Bedford, an associate professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington.
Dr. Bedford said it was possible that the two cases could be unrelated, and had been introduced separately into the United States. But he said that was unlikely, however, because in both cases the virus contained a genetic variation that appears to be rare it was found in only two of the 59 samples whose sequences have been shared from China, where the virus originated. A scientist who was not involved in the analysis said he agreed with the conclusion that the second case was connected to the original Washington case. I think hes right, said Andrew Rambaut, professor of molecular evolution at the University of Edinburgh, referring to Dr.

In other words, a lot of people had a bad cold and didn’t think twice about it.
It’s in the country and probably will remain. In fact, it’s probably been here for some time, ignored by most who have caught it, and misdiagnosed in worse cases.
BS from the NY Slimes!
Exactly. But that will be such a disappointment to the Dems - and to so many here.
From descriptions in the press, I had Coronavirus a month ago. Sure felt like it. Never been to China BTW
Seriously. I just do not understand how this disease is scary — as a disease.
I understand that some people are worried about the economic disruption that could come from supply chain issues. That seems to me to fall into the “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” category. If people over-react, things could get ugly for awhile. But that seems relatively easy to “fix” and long-term could (hopefully) result in people seeing the value of keeping more economic infrastructure at home rather than in China.
But, as a disease, this thing just doesn’t seem to be anything special.
There have been quite few here that caught what they call is the double flu in December and some in January and had a very hard time recovering. I think it was something like got sick ..recovered ..got slammed again.
It could have been this...or something else
perhaps one of those people will chime in with what happened
Just trying to scare the shitte out of the masses.
And for some others, it was simply mild cold symptoms or even completely asymptomatic all together.
The part of King County that the persons infected live in has the highest concentration of ethnic Chinese people in the state. It is most likely that they came into contact with someone who picked it up while they were visiting China who had minor or no symptoms.
When I read the something may happen or may have happened, I stop reading. especially from the NYT.
With the time it took the Chinese to recognize that a new virus was about, and then the time it took them announce it to the world, several weeks, or a few months, could have passed while air travel to and from China continued as normal.
If this is true its the best thing for America. The biggest worry with this virus is the hype, not the virus. The news is worse than the virus. The canclations are worse than the virus. The virus is about 50% more deadly than the flu. We can handle that. We can’t stop the virus. We can’t even slow it down. Just let people get it and move on. Think of it as a bad flu season. We may lose grandma this year. And we may not. But just let it wave over us. Everyone should go back to work. The news is worse than the virus.
From the description of the symptoms, I think I had it 2 years ago.
Wait, What?
These two cases could possibly have been "introduced" into the US, meaning they that might have been brought into the country?
That scenario if true would mean that these two cases don't signify a spread in this country.
Did these two people travel from another country, or not??
I wonder if I haven’t had the coronavirus. For a period of two weeks, I have had low grade cold symptoms. Mild congestion and slightly scratchy throat with plenty of phlegm coughed up. It just never got any worse.
I worry that you may be correct.
Now, my question is....are the people who had the 'virus' unknowlingly and recovered, are they likely to have heart issues like some have been reporting?
Anyone who can really think knows that this is true. You think that just because you are in America that you can avoid the same kind of outbreak as in other countries. Consider the issues with this virus that allow it to spread so easily.
