An editorial published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine speculated that the coronavirus currently causing panic in world markets could turn out no worse than “a severe seasonal influenza” in terms of mortality.
Citing an analysis of the available data from the outbreak in China, the authors note that there have been zero cases among children younger than 15; and that the fatality rate is 2% at most, and could be “considerably less than 1%.”
Those who have died have been elderly or were already suffering from another illness — as with ordinary flu. The underlying data suggest that the symptoms varies, and fewer than one in six of the cases reported were “severe.”
The authors note that coronavirus looks to be much less severe than other recent outbreaks of respiratory illnesses:
[T]he overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.
The vast majority of patients recover, and among those who are hospitalized, the median stay thus far is 12 days.
Coronavirus, they note, does spread easily, and the average infected person has infected two other people. That means the U.S. should expect the illness to gain a “foothold.” But they note travel restrictions on China (imposed by President Donald Trump over the objections of some critics) “may have helped slow the spread of the virus.”

China is not even close to shutting down. Most of the huge Chinese economy outside Wuhan is chugging along quite nicely thank you very much. Even the worst predictions have the Chinese economy growth only slowing down by just a few points. The operative word being “growth”. Not only is the Chinese economy NOT GOING INTO A RECESSION, THE ECONOMY WILL ACTUALLY GROW THIS YEAR, just at a slower rate.

A virus can be engineered genetically to attach to unique genetic sites. China is just doing their usual culling, or maybe someone forgot to shut the lab door. There has been only a little comparison data about deaths with folks who are genetically related to the Wuhan region.
Either that or we are all going to die, again.

Maybe that’s because China was experiencing protests at the time and wanted to shut them down.
Too funny - we know the Flu kills an average of 30K (or so) Americans a year and I have known 2 of them over the years (both in their late 70s).
Coronavirus has, so far, infected under 100K world-wide.
The Flu infects a minimum of 29 million Americans every year.
If coronavirus infects 300 times as many folks world-wide as it has so far, it will be approaching the number of American Flu infections that happen every year.
Cue up some angst music - it will suit your “There needs to be a world plague so i can stop worrying and get to coping” attitude.
This article confirms what I have been saying: We don’t know what the true mortality rate is. I think it’s substantially lower than 2%. This article cites a 2% mortality rate in people who were HOSPITALIZED. That’s a different kettle of fish than claiming that 2% of those infected are going to die. Asians are notoriously germ phobes and freak out at any infectious diseases. I predict this whole thing blows over by the end of this week.
Or they failed to use the PPE correctly, break in PPE protocol etc. too.
