The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday alerted Americans to begin preparing for the spread of coronavirus in the United States, after the flu-like virus surfaced in several more countries.
The announcement signals a change in tone for the U.S. health agency, which had largely been focused on efforts to stop the virus from entering the country and quarantining individuals traveling from China.

“Flu and its near relative, pneumonia, have much greater death rate tallies.”
Not the flu.
The flu has killed more people. It is endemic; happens every year. This kills a higher proportion of the afflicted, is more contagious and can be transmitted by an asymptomatic carrier. It is not endemic. Let’s not fart around waiting for it to become endemic. Or the flu will be so 2019.
Containment is key. That is likely to mean quarantines even here in the USA. So prepare and be vigilant.
N95 masks are not perfect, but will largely filter out corona virus. They must fit snugly, and will be ineffective worn over facial air. Used correctly, they are basically the same as what medical professionals are using when dealing with infected patients. You can be infected via your eyes as well, so consider having some spare goggles as well.
I found four old surgical masks the other day. I’m prepared.
Total death Coronavirus world wide: 2711 (If you believe communists)
None of those behaved like this and none of them scared me.
This one is far more dangerous. I’m not scared, but it has definitely caught my attention.
Don’t panic. Prepare and be vigilant. There are massive quarantines going on even in some Western countries and it would be foolish not to be ready to survive if you get caught in one.
Do our troops overseas have access to masks? Should they not be withdrawn from contaminated areas such as Italy and places in the ME?
I thought the point of masks was to avoid spreading the virus to others -- by reducing the radius to which the wearer's exhalations reach.
Yes, they probably are useless for preventing the wearer from catching the virus.
25 masks are only good for one use or one per day/outing.
5 masks at 1 per day...during an 8 week quarantine? LOL...
Over $500 for one person for not even a month.
Nose/Mouth mask alone may not be sufficient.
Eyes need to be protected as well.
Did she specify how to prepare? Yes. She said we’re supposed to “have discussions.”
I saw that the Vietnam cases havent moved. Not enough testing kits?
Is there any attenuation in warmer climate?
and don’t forget the latex gloves - not the ones labeled food service - not adequate. you can get some food ones off Amazon $25 or so a box of 100 as I recall
you’ll have to learn to take them off without cross-contamination - not easy
I started to buy some masks early on then decided to buy more non perishable food and get ahead on my essential prescriptions meds. Which are fortunately very few. If it gets so bad that we should be afraid to go out without masks, I'm not going out
All the medical people I have heard say the masks help to keep you from spreading a virus, not from catching it.
I’m guessing they will have N95 masks. I could be wrong.
First of all the reading I have done says the fatalities are due to extreme immune response which causes fluid to build up in the lungs. I used to get the same response before I started getting routine flu shots. Now I might get a cold but have not had a severe congestion type response in several years. I also stay away from people in general and don’t touch my face ever. Going to Vegas next month and don’t expect any issues. Use normal precautions and all should be fine.
“They also are pro-actively addressing the problems with the supply chain (e.g availability of masks).”
HHS said they have a 30 million stockpile of masks but estimate they need 300 million. That is a pretty big deficit.
Oh, and the 300 million is just for health care workers.
Would need hundreds of millions more monthly for regular Americans to wear to work each day.
Isn’t going to happen.
We are both seniors, and my husband already has COPD, so I am worried. But we do own an isolated cabin that we can go to, if necessary.
