Sanders Doubles Down on Defending Castro, Praises China for Lifting ‘People Out of Extreme Poverty’
National Review ^ | February 25, 2020 | Zachary Evans

Senator Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) on Monday doubled down on his praise of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and added praise for aspects of the Chinese authoritarian regime.

“Truth is truth. All right?” Sanders said at a CNN town hall event when challenged on his previous praise for Castro’s regime. “If you want to disagree with me, if somebody wants to say that—and by the way, all of the Congress people you mentioned just so happen to be supporting other candidates…but you know, the truth is the truth. And that is what happened on the first years of the Castro regime.”

Sanders then expanded his comments on Cuba to include praise of China.

“China is an authoritarian country, becoming more and more authoritarian,” Sanders said. “But can anyone deny, the facts are clear, that they have taken more people out of extreme poverty than any country in history?”

In an interview on CBS’s 60 Minutes aired Sunday, Sanders highlighted Cuba’s “literacy program” as an example of good done by Fidel Castro.

“We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know?” Sanders said. “When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?”

The Vermont senator’s comments have drawn bipartisan criticism, particularly among Florida lawmakers. Florida has one of the largest populations of Cuban immigrants in the U.S., many of whom fled the oppressive Castro regime.

Bernie, you are an idiot. Mao's Great Leap Forward 'killed 45 million in four years'

What has lifted hundreds of millions of Chinese out of poverty is their partial transition to a market economy. Someone should ask Bernie how he thinks China reduced poverty.

45 million “bumps in the road” as Obama would say.

So many Freepers want this idiot at the top of the DEM ticket, thinking it would be a slam dunk for Trump and much of the GOP in Congress. Apparently, many have not learned much from history. A vast majority of this country does not think like the average Freeper.

I have to give him credit for sticking to his principles. Not many people would actively express support for brutal communist dictatorships, but Bernie remains a fan and isn’t afraid to say so.

Bernie you better hang it up now. The more you talk and point, the more votes you loose.

We Americans reduced the poverty in China. We exploited the cheap labor offered by the Chicoms. Our money poured into China and the Chinese government doled it out according to their plans. Meanwhile back at the ranch, they were stealing our technology and intellectual property. We reaped what we sowed and still do.

“”all of the Congress people you mentioned””

Is that the best he can do in describing Congressional members? Congress people, you know?

The 2008 and 2012 elections were instructive in that regard. Obama was the most radical Marxist Senator perhaps ever and warmed that seat for a short while. Do NOT underestimate the sheer stupidity of the American electorate.

Burnie Sanders has not a CLUE as to how anybody is lifted from poverty, nor how the growth of literacy is tied to growing prosperity. Certain things are synergistic in nature, and one of the most synergistic of social constructions is that brand of economic theory known as capitalism. The notion that the innovator is permitted to retain the rewards for bringing a new, easier, cheaper way of carrying out old tasks, many of which MUST be done if any society is to function, is a relatively new concept, framed in the founding documents of the United States of America, which confer and reaffirm the God-given rights to life, liberty and the “pursuit of happiness” (codeword for the ownership interest of property).

After all, God does not WANT you to live in imposed poverty or go through life illiterate and stupid.

Ain't it the truth? Also, I imagine the Democrats were very happy that Trump won the Republican nomination since some "experts" thought that Mrs. Bill Clinton might win all 50 states.

I guess in BS’s mind, if you lop off a lot of people at the bottom, that raises the median income level. They could raise the IQ median level by lopping off a few of the dems in the Senate starting with BS.

Bernie will start a long-needed conversation about communism.

PDJT is just the guy to carry the other side of the conversation.

Hey Bernie - do you know what has been the most successful force in human history in lifting billions out of extreme poverty? It starts with a “C”.
