The Justice Department unleashed a legal assault on sanctuary jurisdictions across the country this week, filing a new round of civil lawsuits asking judges to overturn the policies, and warning state and city officials they could soon face their own criminal charges for harboring illegal immigrants.
Lawsuits were filed against California, New Jersey and King County, in Washington, each of which has adopted novel ways of interfering with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcements ability to arrest, detain and deport illegal immigrants.
Attorney General William P. Barr also said his department is taking a look at state and local prosecutors who pursue lesser charges against illegal immigrants in order to keep their rap sheets cleaner, keeping them off ICEs radar.
And Mr. Barr said hes ordered a review to see whether the Justice Department can use a criminal law that prohibits the harboring or shielding of aliens in the United States against jurisdictions that have sanctuary policies.
Today is a significant escalation in the federal governments efforts to confront the resistance of sanctuary cities, Mr. Barr said in remarks to the National Sheriffs Association, where he unveiled the legal barrage. We will consider taking action against any jurisdiction that, or any politician who, unlawfully obstructs the federal enforcement of immigration law.
The Trump administration has been in a running battle with sanctuary cities, whose number has grown exponentially as anti-Trump state and local governments seek new ways to thwart the presidents get-tough immigration policies.
Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions had tried to cut off some grant funding for sanctuary cities, but courts across the country rejected that policy as illegal.
Mr. Sessions also raised the possibility of using the criminal alien harboring laws against sanctuaries, though he never followed through.

Can't be true ... Barr is a do-nothing ... FReepers assure me this is so. /s
Felony convictions followed by prison terms and disbarments should deter local prosecutors from continuing with their obstruction of Federal immigration law.
About time.
Im confused. Under Obie immigration was a federal matter. Now it is a state issue???
Send them to Gitmo for domestic terrorism
Don’t let it bother you so much what others think.
If you think he’s good man, that should be enough.
Can’t be true ... Barr is a do-nothing ... FReepers assure me this is so. /s
Now just who were those house members that physically escorted illegals across the border. CA and WA are now gearing up to fight Barr. .....this fits perfectly with the calls for Barr’s. Impeachment.
“Shielding of aliens”.
There’s already a good law...Aiding and Abetting.
Good!
Heavy fines would be a particularly effective deterrence.
It would only take several felony convictions of politicians, prosecutors, and at least one governor, would entirely end the sanctuary city/state crap.
I’m sure you remember that in 0bama CrapCare, if you didn’t buy it, you would be charged a expensive penalty. ...and if you didn’t pay the penalty, you would be arrested and charged with a felony.
Most every profession that requires an advanced college degree and licensing by the state, such as medical doctors, engineers, architects, lawyers, stipulate that should the licensee be convicted of a felony, said licensee would forever forfeit their license. ....
You would lose your license, your job, your lively hood. ..8 to 10 years of college. ...down the drain. Threatened with prison..because you refused to bow down to government.
Trump stopped this lunacy. ..he saved my career because I refused to pay the government penalties.
bkmk
And Mr. Barr said hes ordered a review to see whether the Justice Department can use a criminal law that prohibits the harboring or shielding of aliens in the United States against jurisdictions that have sanctuary policies.
You are correct just read the quote...”he’s ordered a review.” Until he actually orders prosecutions he wil continue to be a do-nothing POS.
Mr. Sessions also raised the possibility of using the criminal alien harboring laws against sanctuaries, though he never followed through.
The hallmark of his entire miserable tenure as AG.
L
Yes, as in, in addition to the lawsuits he filed. Not a do-nothing.
Prison or execution are the only effective deterrents, if you fine them, they just won’t pay.
The hostile to Barr segment here is also throwing shade on the President. I suspect cases of watching too much fake news if not trolls.
It’s simple...if anyone ignores federal law enforcement or ICE on the local level and a crime is committed, charge the mayor, city council, governor, etc. with being an accessory.
