We have nothing against South Bend, Indiana. In fact, two members of our opinion staff were born and raised in that city. But we all know that it's no proving ground for the presidency. More generally speaking, service as a small-town mayor is not in itself sufficient training for the Oval Office.
Pete Buttigieg, who served two terms as the mayor of Indiana's fourth-largest city, begs to differ. "Pragmatic and value-driven leadership it's what mayors practice every day," he said in September. "We need a lot more of that in Washington right now. The following month, Buttigieg said, "Theres no job quite like the presidency, but, when it comes to preparing for the presidency, I think theres no job quite like being a mayor.
The kind of reality checks that you face as a mayor, on the ground, facing some of the toughest problems in policy and the toughest problems that Americans deal with that are at stake in these choices, that's exactly the perspective we need to bring to Washington," he said last month.
Small-town city government is a noble vocation, but Buttigieg is really asking a lot of his listeners. First, there is his actual record, which is spotty. For example, South Bends violent crime increased by 70% in the years following Buttigiegs election, even as crime decreased nationally and increased by only about 10% statewide.
Second, there is the fact that Buttigieg's highest winning vote total as mayor was about 11,000.
There is also the central question of whether being the mayor of South Bend or of any small town qualifies someone to sit behind the Resolute Desk. Not to insult or degrade the work of small-town mayors, as former Vice President Joe Bidens campaign did this month, but the answer is: not really.

Nor did getting your pooper poked repeatedly.
Booty Gig is from South Bend ( over) ?
And he wants his wife to be 1st Lady, dressed in drag for White House Xmas festivities?
Not gonna happen.
I find it hilarious that Mayor Pete really is a South Bender! Too funny.
Not likely; more like The Wide Receiver.
I suspect one reason the Democratic starting field was somewhere just south of 30 is because of Obama. Obama had exactly zero resume to be president. Even Democrats looked at Obama and thought, “Jesus, even I could do better than that.”
This must have been the down ticket thinking also, as, suddenly, we had barmaids running for office.
Buttplug was elected by liberal pukes in Notre Dame U. I doubt he got 25% of the vote anyplace else.
For me, his being from South Bend, Indiana doesn’t disqualify him. What does disqualify him is that he’s a sexual pervert.
He’s a little to Bible preachy for my taste.
I was born and raised in South Bend in the 60’s and 70’s and it was a really nice town. We actually had a immensely popular Republican mayor (Lloyd Allen)
Forty plus years of Democrat “leadership” and today it is a toilet.
Butt-itch-itch isn’t even qualified to be the no-talent B-HO’s file clerk, much less a mayor or, gawd forbid, president. He’s a garden variety jawbone narcissist, not the proven legendary backbone Goliath that is our POTUS - who, by the way, would destroy this little man child in his very first debate.
South Bendover is half the population of Richmond VA.
No mayor of a small city is ready to be President..
“This must have been the down ticket thinking also, as, suddenly, we had barmaids running for office.”
And winning!
They have wet T-shirt night and the winning bar-maid runs for Congress. Only in America.
There's no shortage of those in the history of US politics.
He isn't disqualified, but he certainly is not worth choosing ahead of the current, very successful President, or even most of those in the Democrat Primary field (despite it mostly being a clown car). He literally has 2 year of real-world experience (as a consultant), and has zero political experience outside of a college town. His biggest decisions to date have been about parks and roundabouts and laser light shows.
Let him seek the Governorship of Indiana, and be a success there, and get re-elected... and THEN he might have a decent background for the most important job on the planet. But not before then.
He's 38. Space Shuttles were in use before he was born. He wasn't yet alive when Pope John Paul and Pres Reagan were shot. Michael Jackson was still black when he was born.
“Pragmatic and value-driven leadership it’s what mayors practice every day,”
No, in my experience small town mayors practice graft and corruption with the local old boys network every day.
Petie the boy mayor (AKA Powder Puff Pete) is a joke... I thought honestly he would be a possible threat in future cycles, but he’s made such an ass hat out of himself, pandering to ever radical idea he could find..... he’s just a joke at this point.
Only the fact that the Democrat Primary is such a dumpster fire this time around, is why he’s even still around.
“Let him seek the Governorship of Indiana, and be a success there, and get re-elected...”
He’s a Democrat in Indiana, he has risen as high as he can there. The only other office he can run for there and win is probably for the South Bend House seat, but the Dem who holds that has been in office since the 80s so good luck with that unless he wants to retire.
He’s making a pretty good gambit here. Sure, he’ll never win the Presidency, but he is nationally known now, and well-liked by Democrats, so he has a good chance to get a cabinet post or a VP slot or something tossed his way in the future.
I guess I don’t really mean disqualified, I mean dismissed by me as someone I’d consider voting for.
The mayoral position was Pete’s training for his circumlocution.
Petes dad was a professor of Marxism Clinton is a Marx worshipper as is Obama. Bernie is a socicialist. The Democrats are cultivating these people it cant be coincidental.
