The Nuclear Option — Reality Check: Bernie Has Lost Voters and It’s Because of Trump’s Economy

NEW YORK CITY — Is it possible that President Trump has already beaten Sen. Bernard Sanders?

Four years ago, Bernie Bros stormed Iowa and took over the Democratic caucuses.

In Iowa, he came within a whisker of beating the Clinton machine. He won 696 local delegates, just 4 fewer than Mrs. Clinton’s 700.

In New Hampshire, Mr. Sanders utterly swamped Mrs. Clinton. With 151,000 voters turning out for Mr. Sanders, he clobbered Mrs. Clinton by 22 percentage points.

Now, fast-forward from 2016 to today.

Certainly, Mr. Sanders is the clear front-runner for the Democratic nomination in a far more crowded field. But the underlying numbers suggest that Mr. Sanders already has lost an alarming amount of support over the past four years.

In Iowa this year, he fell from getting 49% of the vote to just 26%, earning 130 fewer delegates than he did in 2016.

But that enthusiasm bump may have been blunted by the fact that Mr. Trump also set a new record for an incumbent president in an uncontested New Hampshire primary, earning over 120,000 votes.

Far more troubling for Mr. Sanders is that his support in New Hampshire collapsed from 60% in 2016 to a mere 25% this week. That means 80,000 voters who pulled the lever for Mr. Sanders in 2016 pulled the lever for somebody else this year.

In the three-plus years since Mr. Trump got elected, the economy has roared to life on all the very simple prescriptions he campaigned on and has successfully enacted despite the non-stop impeachment parade.

Lower taxes, gutting regulations and scrapping bad trade deals have paid enormous dividends already.

The result has been a record stock market, wages soaring and unemployment plummeting.

All of this means its probably not the best time to try peddling socialism.

I heard on the radio that Yang’s supporters second choice was Trump. Interesting. While those are small numbers, every bit helps.

But maybe Bernie Sanders hasn’t lost as many as the rest of the field.

I may be misreading things, but I think he has some pretty die-hard support.

I’d be surprised if he isn’t competitive for months...

Where he found them, I don’t know, but he’s connecting somehow.

But how will he draw them. He hasn’t claimed to be of Native American ancestry?

He’s told some whoppers of his own, but I don’t think they’re the same ones she’s be telling.

Smile...

Bernie’s supporters are the people living in their mom’s basement, complaining about the economy because no one is hiring them because they are too lazy to look for an entry-level job.

I like that he refers to “Mrs. Clinton” instead of “Hillary”. Myself, I refer to her as “Mrs. Bill Clinton”. It’s a small reminder that she got her power the old-fashion way for women. No conservative should refer to her as “Hillary”, even though “Mrs. Bill Clinton” is harder to type.

Also the people with useless degrees in “wymyn’s studies,” underwater basket weaving, humnities, etc., that are in said basement. They complain that nobody is hiring them - because their degree is worthless - and is in fact a warning sign to not hire the person.

Unfortunately, there are a LOT of these people.

So what happens if we go into a recession before election Day? This economy is not that strong. Does Bernie win? With this “we can’t lose attitude” I think he does.

Yes, As one Dem pundit said, they already have a candidate who will energize their voters: Trump

When looking at these numbers you have to add up all the Democratic votes-its misleading to look at Sanders vote total now, the field is much larger and total vote in New Hampshire was greater in 2020 than 2016. You gotta believe they will all vote for whoever the Dem nominee is -just like the all vote for impeachment and against Kavanaugh, Dems march together-no thinking-just vote Dem

Then the inverse must also be true. The next time we have a recession voters are going to flock to a socialist message.

Bernie’s problem is the passage of time; for the last three years, the radicals of 2016 have gotten older and wiser (even a little), and they’ve had to pay bills (and taxes), and they’ve seen all of the horrors predicted in a Trump administration come to nothing - that is why the demonstrations are much smaller than three years ago.

Not only has Trump won over more people, but he has lessened the anxiety of many of the “freaks of ‘16”.
