Cuomo to meet with Trump at White House

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is scheduled to meet with President Donald J. Trump at the White House on Tuesday afternoon to discuss a 2017 change in federal tax law that the governor contends has been devastating to New York and other "Democratic states."

Last week, Cuomo had announced New York is facing an unexpected $2.3 billion shortfall — the most significant in eight years — that he attributed in large part to the federal rollback of the state and local tax deduction, known as SALT.

Cuomo's administration contends that the $10,000 cap on federal tax deductions of state and local taxes has adversely affected about 1.7 million of New York's 9 million taxpayers, and that it's one reason so many people are moving to other states.

Trump acknowledged last week the tax law has had "severe" implications for New York and other blue states, but he said that New Yorkers, especially upstate residents, have "been treated very badly" by their state government. The president has, on more than one occasion, recommended upstate New York residents consider leaving.

My state income taxes exceed the $10k limit. That means my property taxes are also excluded. That's about $10k in deductions that I've lost due to the changes in federal tax regulations. I live in Idaho, so the pain isn't just hitting Democrat majority states. When I retire, my state income tax and property taxes combined will probably fall under the $10k limit.

I'm reminded that I need to do my taxes.

The problem is those NYers keep voting for what they are fleeing, see VA as an example for the future of the southeast.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is not Fredo. His punk little brother at CNN is.

I view Cuomo as grandstanding to his constituents. Had he really sought change, help from PDJTvhe wouldn’t be presenting his request in partisan terms. ( and I favor lifting the SALT cap). The issue could have been presented in economic /non- partisan language instead)

Wait - doesn’t make sense unless the rich are fleeing New York. I no longer itemize on Federal form, due to the large Federal Standard deduction; but now I pay MORE state tax, since I can’t itemize on State income unless I itemize on Federal income.

The conversation will go like this:

Cuomo: Hey we need a federal bailout.

Trump: No. Bye.

My daughter isn't rich and both her and hubby have worked their a**** off to buy a nice home and a vacation property.

$10,000 is too low for NYS...these are local and school taxes we're talking about not state taxes.

Raise it to $20,000.

The Dems want to up the tax on the wealthiest across the nation in exchange for the raise to $20,000. It passed but DOA at the Senate.

Progress. He’s coming in to talk. Not standing outside, shouting and “resisting”.

Should’ve tried that three years ago.

He’s basically acknowledging that the people paying taxes are the hardest hit but he still needs their money. Which he cant’ get any of if they leave.

Keep your eye on the ball, look at what you lose and what you gain. and then look at the NET. Get the whole picture, not the partial truth from the fake news.

standard deduction for a married couple is $27,000 this year and will go up Most people are winners.
