Michael Bloomberg's Claim About 'Children' Killed by 'Gun Violence' Is Off by 73%. Such inflammatory exaggeration seems designed to avoid a substantive discussion of the presidential candidate's gun control proposals.

Michael Bloomberg's Super Bowl ad, which presents the Democratic presidential contender as a brave advocate of public safety who is not afraid to take on "the gun lobby," claims "2,900 children die from gun violence every year" in the United States, which is not true. That number includes young adults as well as minors, and it includes suicides as well as homicides.

Bloomberg's campaign cited Everytown for Gun Safety, a Bloomberg-backed group, as the source of the number used in the ad. "Annually," the organization said in June 2019 fact sheet, "nearly 2,900 children and teens (ages 0 to 19) are shot and killed." The ad changed "children and teens" (including young adults) to "children," presumably because that makes the deaths more shocking, strengthening the emotional case for the gun control policies Bloomberg favors.

According to to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, FactCheck.org notes, the average number of firearm-related deaths involving Americans 17 or younger from 2013 through 2017 (the period used by Everytown for Gun Safety) was about 1,500, roughly half the number cited by Bloomberg. Furthermore, nearly two-fifths of those deaths were suicides, meaning the number of minors killed each year by "gun violence," as that term is usually understood, is about 73 percent smaller than the figure cited in Bloomberg's ad.

The case highlighted by the TV spot does not actually fit into any of these categories. The ad features Calandrian Kemp, whose 20-year-old son, George, was shot to death in 2013 at a park in Richmond, a Houston suburb, during a confrontation that a Texas appeals court described as "gang-related." According to the court, "two groups of young men, most of them teenagers, had met that night for a fight."

Is there really any question about where Bloomberg stands on gun control. He believes that only bodyguards for the privileged and the privileged can have them.

My proposal for Gun Control is for the government to give you tax breaks of 100% for fire-arm training courses and range practice.

Slight difference in messaging -

Bloomberg: “Mike will get it done”

Trump: “Thank you Mr. President for getting it done”

I was taught to handle guns when I was 5 years old like many here. They have been a joyous addition to my life. What is lacking today is proper education for the children about gun handling that my father taught me. That includes lessons about respect, civility and RESPONSIBILITY so lacking among the youth in today’s world. Excuses made by the idiots who think the 2nd Amendment is out of date should be totally refuted and put down hard. In Europe the Brits have given up their guns while the French happily hold on to theirs.

How old are these “children” and how many of them were committing a crime when they got shot?

Perhaps if Mikey had served his country in uniform in '66, he'd better understand how important weapons are in defending ourselves, our country and our freedoms.

Instead, he graduated from Harvard Business School while some of us served in the treelines and rice paddies of Southeast Asia.

Perspective, Mikey.

Hi Molly -

Pretty sure that while the French may have a better set of freedoms than the Brits, they still have very prohibitive licensing, registration, and very few place they can legally shoot.

Switzerland is better, but less so lately.

I just saw his ad and it was crap.I want to know what the real story on how this kid was killed. Another good boy going to college, probably in the wrong place and a involved in black on black crime that Bloomberg does not want to talk about.

Let me guess - 2800 of those “children” are teenage thugs in the thick of the crime.

Mike Bloomberg’s super hypocrite Super Bowl gun control ad:
“... fighting for every child, because you have a right to live. No one has a right to take your hopes and dreams.”
Mike’s U.S. gun death statistic: 2,900 per year.
U.S. abortion death statistic: 2,899 per day.

There is crime by gun, and there are accidents by gun; but there’s no such thing as “gun violence.”

Good for you! I taught my children to hunt and shoot at an early age but gave each their first gun of their own when they were 12. Hunting and trap shooting were great fun for us all.

very prohibitive licensing, registration, and very few place they can legally shoot.

Hi there! Long time, no speak!
The license is obtained in two steps. One should study for it as it contains a good grasp of the French law such as how far from a house one must be to lawfully fire at game, recognizing various game tracks, game silhouettes and various other useful information such as crossing a stile. The first test is written with questions projected on a screen. If you pass that written test, you are given a Field Test at a later date which comprises handling your weapon, when you can shoot, knowledge of distances required, etc. Once you obtain your license if you pass both tests, you receive a lifetime license. You might hunt with your hometown club exclusively or with several clubs public and/or private. That depends on you. Expenses are relative to your choices. You purchase a card for hunting rights in that club or may combine two locals into one club. Game in my region has always been relatively plentiful. I’ve hunted wild boar, small deer, Lievre (hare), rabbit, quail, woodcock, pigeon, pheasant, duck, geese, small birds, partridge and becassine in my region in France. The Cerf (similar but slightly smaller than our Elk) can be hunted on private domains. Maybe around Paris there are not so many places, but I’ve hunted a good part of France quite reasonably. The French have a very high gun ownership per capita. (Much higher than the official numbers. They have long memories.) A few years ago I was asked one day by a gendarme I knew when I would come in to register my Winchester Model 12. Pump guns had been declared semi-automatics so required registration. I told him “Never.” he grinned and said “I don’t blame you” and went on his way. Never heard anything more on the subject. :>)
